Help with swap for flat to 302. 37 ford coupe

Not sure if I want to put in 302 or ol fashion 289?

 

Maybe ol fashion 289 basic everything.
Some of the them had a little power.
? I was looking at hipo 289 ... babies are expensive besides too many mods on this ol car has flathead all original to make it solid would take some work to handle bigger horse engine.

 

The car in the photo is a 1936 Ford , not a 1937.

Or keep it stock with around 80 hp. The stang had about 600.

 

I would find a second flathead,build it hot and top it with a 4-71,6-71. Then swap. That would probably give you 300hp if done right and look cool.

 

If it runs and drives, which it should for what you paid for it, maybe drive it for the summer and see if you can embrace the old timey feel of the existing drivetrain. Anyone can rent a car and go fast, but this offers a different experience.

I just sold a 48 chrysler convertible. I need to get it running as soon as possible (ford) drive in for a while see how it drives . The mustang was and is a beautiful car 2019 was the first bicentennial . Expensive to maintain . Too many whistles . Never had any problems. Very fast , I will miss it . I think I will put a little hair in the 36.
Without over doing it.
Will a y block v8 fit this car without too much modes , I expect drive train changes ie; drive shaft , axles . Brakes rear end. Etc. I might as well go all the way .

IF your gonna be a "Ford Guy" ...you need to know a 5.0/302 engine is basically just a 289 with a stroker crank !
5.0 engine is wayyy better than the 289 because they are more plentiful than 289's...They come with a roller cam and can easily clock up 200,000 miles on the odometer. They can be modified with basic bolt-on parts to the extent they will destroy themselves from an abundance of power !! (over 400HP)
A small block Ford should fit easier than an old Y-block and make more reliable power than the Y-blk.
SBF is wayyyy cheaper to find/build/and maintain than a flattie or Y-blk.
I vote for a 5.0 swap with better breathing heads and a lopey roller camshaft to make it run AND sound like a hot rod. 300 EZ HP.....

I like your idea however that car looks cool it is so stock it has dementia.
Side way 3 member rear end drive shaft maybe a new tranny . Flywheel . Lots of mods for a stock original, pretty much.
Lots to think about it.

Might help if you know what you want the car to be, when it's finished. And if you can stick to that.

If not, it will languish forever, never getting done.

So, start with a list of requirements for the car. These might include some level of performance, some level of appearance, handling, comfort, etc. Then consider things like cost, and time, and how much work you can do yourself (again considering cost and time), how much you'll have to farm out, how likely it is that the work can actually get done to your satisfaction in the estimated time, and at the estimated cost.

If you don't plan all this, see comment above about never getting done.

 

I'd start out by going on Amazon and ordering this book or one of the others that they have on the smallblock Ford engines. Then you can see what water pump lengths are available and what pulleys you need to get it as short as possible. Then you will know what to look for when you get an engine. There are a lot of configuretion differences and interchange issues when using these engines, so best to research before wading in............

 

Looks like a nice car. Small block fords are long, the firewall will need to be cut and set it back to fit. You’ll need to update the trans and rear end. There are bolt in kits with motor mounts, split wishbone and x-member mounts and rear end mounts. Chassis Engineering (Now part of Heidts), Pete & Jakes and Weedetr all have those. Weedetr is a member of the forums you can reach out direct to him.

I am and old dude. My first car was a 1968 hemi Road runner.
Been building and racing them for years. Nearly All types of fast american cars. Never had a mustang , I did have a 68 z28 Chevy.
57 caddie eldo white convertible. I could go on for a while.
I figured that I should go to site that deals in the things I may do .thanks 31.I also have a 1999 gmc jimmy suv with a factory paxton supercharger 2 door .

all that aside...if you want useful suggestions, you really need to tell us a lot more about your plans for the car.

I'd probably leave it alone, just get all the stock stuff working. But then, I wouldn't have bought that car, in the first place.

Are most 302s roller cams ? And is a 302 a 4 bolt main ?

 

I guess it depends on what 302 !

 

You don't say if you plan on doing the work yourself or farm it out.
If it was my car, I would upgrade the brakes to hydraulic, get some new lowering springs and possibly a dropped axle. install a new 525 steering box. Drive it.
After that, I would get a 283 or 350 chevy sb and use an adapter to the stock tranny or upgrade to a 39 box. Dual exhaust.
If you buy the parts in advance, you can do the swap in a month pretty easily.
