When mounting a wheel on my 61 f100 I noticed the drum would turn....but the big rib on the inside did not!!! note the yellow dots. This drum measured only. .085 , so not as thin as many others I've seen still in use. Never seen it before, but I guess they do break !
Not sure. I think they may have been driving it like this. The broken off ring sat nicely in the backing plate, no rubbing when I turned the drum. Kind of a brain teaser when I saw it.....What the hell?
Looks like a place on the drum that could have collected a bunch of metal eating stuff over the years. Being a possible farm truck probably increased that chance. Its probably not a place that would have been (or even could have been) washed very often. The wheel would have prevented that area on the drum from being "cleaned" very often.
Had something similar happen to my Dad's F-100 many years ago. Wore through the brake shoe materal, then ground through the flat area where the materal was attached leaving just the rib section of the former brake shoe that cut the drum like a parting tool. Two piece drum, inner ring flopping around ringing like a bell going down the road. Don' tworry about that grinding noise, it'll be fine
