Ah, the art of the indoor car show. The books we could write. It's not what you show, it's who you know!
After accidentally coming across this car also in a 1960 r and c I'm going to have to say r and c must have had a thing for quad headlight trim fives. Thinking your car was done first though
Thats a good looking 56 as well. I think I have pictures of it somewhere before. Well adding quads was the trend at that point. Taboo had them added around spring/summer of 1959 based on my timeline of photos. I think a couple other tri fives just in the pacific northwest got them around the same time. Madam Fifi (56 Chevy as well) out of Seattle had the Chrysler headlights as well and built around the same time.
I actually like quad conversions like yours. But the ones where they used rectangle headlights.....naw lol. But yeah at a glance with the side trim I had to double check your thread lol
yeah I was never a fan of that either and the trend never really took off here in the Portland area to my knowledge. Yeah the side trim trick was used on a handful of cars, I think Kustomrama shows at least 5-6 56's doing it. Simple and effective to making something different. At least with the hard top they just needed another set of fronts. Our car started life as a 150 so all the trim had to be sourced, but when it was done in 1958, the original owner/builder just went to the dealer for new stuff.
Hard to believe today is the 10 year anniversary since I took these pictures. This was the first time the car came out of the garage under her own power. Car is nowhere near complete. Interior is not done, only had two Chrome wheels at this point. The side you cant see is still on the worn out rollers. Had to get the car outside for pictures to put in indoor show applications. We were scrambling to get the car together for Portland in just 2 months.
So to officially answer your question a year later, I finally found the actual location of Golfland. I joined a historic Beaverton facebook group to ask that question and someone dug up a old newspaper clipping. I was way off on where I thought this was, the magazine photo shoot was in Beaverton on Beaverton-Hillsdale hwy in the parking lot of Jesuit High School, Golfland ****ed up against it on the east side. But now I know where the official photo shoot happened and might try and recreate the photos this summer.
Didnt take any pictures, but cleaned Taboo up and got it back to life from its hibernation today. Going to be loading it up next week and we will be hauling it up for two shows next weekend.
Got the paperwork back yesterday and got Taboo woken up from its winter sleep today as it will be going to Portland for the Roadster Show for the Calvacade of Customs display. Ill be around most of the weekend so hope to maybe meet fellow hambers at the show.
Always liked that show. It was as good as the Oakland Roadster show. Lots of good history always showed up there.
nice weather today meant getting Taboo into the car trailer as its gonna be a wet week for Roadster Show setup
Was honored at the Portland Roadster Show with the "Coolest Kustom" pick from West Coast Kustoms. The car was there for display only due to it being a Hall of Fame car, so was floored when we were called up for it.
While waiting to load up after the Roadster Show ended, uncorked the lake plugs and let it idle for a bit. https://youtube.com/shorts/x-ukPIZJVGg?si=KOwQTzix5TJaN_cS
Also during the roadster show, my niece that was born right before Christmas came to her first car show. My mom surprised CJ by dressing her up in a poodle skirt. Taboo was the first old car we have really exposed her to so far.
Came across this photo on Facebook from magazine coverage of the 1959 Portland Roadster Show. Upper right corner has a decent photo of Taboo (Tabu) and the 58 convertible with the full club display for the Exotics of Beaverton. Has a typo of calling Taboo a 55, but this is the oldest print I have found of the cars name.
Reviving the thread tonight because tomorrow I get to view and scan another batch of long lost photos of Taboo and her 58 Chevy sister. Borrowing the photos that came from the family of the owner of the 58.
There is a little street show in Vancouver Saturday, annual event hosted buy the Slo Poks. Uptown main street, we gather around 7-7:30. Done early. Always fun and usually nice cars. Bring school supplies to donate. Not sure if you can make it.
I met a guy there last year, he owns a 32 coupe (nice car) and a 69 Z28. He is bringing the Z this year. Nice ride, pretty original, no console, no PS, tach delete, go fast car.
Show says 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m.? Are you saying you get there at 7:30a.m.?? I figured I'd get there around 9:00a.m., but maybe I better go a lot earlier if guys are getting there that early!
We are meeting at a lot to group up and heading over the show around 8am. Mainly going early to make the odds better that we can at least park together. Doing the same thing next weekend for Kalama
I get there around 8:00. There are lots to park in while waiting for the street to open and the club members to park us. They have to have a permit to close the street, so the time is limited for the event. And since Main Street is not a long stretch of road there is limited parking so early is better than later. You'd be safe at 9:00 but 8:00 is better. Don't forget your school supplies. I started a thread on it to post pictures and such so we don't tie up Taboo's thread.
So got the pictures today and man some neat ones here. Most are of the 58 Impala that was built along side of Taboo, but a few of Taboo. Based on the dates on some of the photos, this is probably the last pictures of these cars prior to having the Chrysler headlights grafted into the noses with the July 59. Also noticing something I dont have in any other pictures of Taboo is the use of the wagon rear bumper. That would be swapped with the headlight change to the 59 Chevy units that are on the car now.
