Thanks for telling us it’s a Ford-o-Matic. Up thru 57 they all started out in 2nd gear when you place it in drive.

You can start out in “L” then shift it to “Dr” at about 15-20 mph and it will perform much better. That’s kind of pita but it does help and you don’t need to press on the throttle as much.

Many wanting to keep and automatic with either a Stock flathead or early Y-Block change to a Ford C4 which you can buy an adapter to use. With a trans and adapter you’re looking over $2K plus labor.

There's good advice in this thread, in between the japes and hi-jinks. Sorry if the OP can't see it.

Some banter is par for the course.

    Humor app my ass.
Snide disrespectful remarks isn't humor. It's just snide and disrespectful. Seems to happen a lot from the same individuals. I'm tired of seeing it. If you can't help somebody, leave 'em alone.

And Today, radial tires help, something to think about with 50s cars back when bias ply narrow tires were all you could get.

I agree with responses, tune, valve adj, might be due.

I bought a parts car once-the lady kept records of her gas mileage including what the name of the station and what time of day it was, like 10:07 am. I thought that was kind of anal:p

Ah hell, Ant knee's jab wudn't much. It's a traditional forum and not a lot of us are app happy. I got a jab the other day about my non Ford/Chevy/Mopar motor knowledge. Took it. It's a traditional forum and I grew up in the mu mu, after the the fifties - so I was ignorant.
Before the OP bailed I was going to say something about flatties starting out with really low compression and it's probably fallen off a bit. But, the trans issue is just as valid, as are the basic tune questions. Advance has a huge impact, both initial as well as mechanical. Other than a couple of little jabs, it was all good info.
