I'm installing a 354 Hemi and TKX in my coupe. I have to modify the crossmember but I have a question. Can I cut the front crossmember supports from their original locations and move them back on the frame? In the picture, the white shows basically what I'd like to do depending on where the pedals, etc. lay out I need to do this because of interference with steering, pedals and exhaust.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Joe

  2. As you already know, the front of the X rails line the main rails all the way forward; but I think if you box the front of the frame from the front to where you bring the X rails back out to main rails it would work.

Thanks for your input. I agree. I'm not sure just how far back I need to go. I'm waiting for a 5" recessed firewall to come in. That will help a lot with the lay out

That Hemi is awfully far back, does it have a supercharger?

I did a hemi in one of our repro 40 frames years ago and did not have that kind of problem. Is the motor blown? Are you using a BBC waterpump? You shouldn't need to move it back that far unless it has a blower on it.

  9. Maybe due something like I did on my 35. I cut the x-member before and after the X, pivoted the front part of the rail out to get the clearance I needed then fit the X back in at the end of trans and welded things back up. I did have a slight problem with master cylinder location and had to curve the X's rail slightly to clear it. 20230819_173438.jpg 20250327_151429.jpg

That's not a bad idea. I'll take a look and see if that'll work. I'm just concerned about the two front supports getting in the way of the steering, pedals etc. Still waiting for the firewall to get here. Thanks

The main reason for the motor being so far back has to do with the way the engine compartment gets thinner towards the front on the 35. I don't want to run with no fenders or cut them. I may have to cut the inner fenders which I can live with
