I am running a '65 409 with a big truck oil pan, and a 1 qt. canister filter. I was told the pan holds more oil than a car. Does anyone here know for sure the exact amount. 7 with small filter, or 8? Dipstick shows 1 qt low with seven?
Truck and car use the same size oil pan just the drain plug is in a different place. Now a 65 car pan is different. I run 7 quarts in my 409 with a truck pan and the canister filter. I don't like to run any more oil than needed to help keep windage down in the crankcase.
That's what I originally had in it but the dipstick read low, and that's what I put back in it today. I guess it doesn't do much good to second guess yourself. Thanks
might want to make sure you have the right dipstick for it as well. I know 65 dip sticks are also one off to go with the car pan. If you have a GM piece should have some part numbers you can search to make sure its the right one. Might be the cause of the low reading as well.
Loosen the hold down tab for the dipstick tube and give it a sharp smack to make sure it is seated all the way down in the oil pan.
