Hot Rods F100 Self adjusting brake wires - is this wrong ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by buickwagon, Mar 28, 2025 at 6:48 AM.

  1. hi all

Fitting up F100 (1953) front brakes with self adjuster kits (H2540 & H2541)
The wire cables - right hand side of the car the cable is at the rear but on the other side it seems to want to go to the front ? this doesnt seem right ?

pic of the left hand front brake assembly - you can see the wire is on the "front" side
is this wrong ? / does it matter ?

    Thanks brake.jpeg

Looking at the pic, the adjuster has an "R" stamped in it and should be an "L" for the left side. Should be on the rear side-never seen one on the front.

You've got the whole assembly wrong for a Left Front.

I don't ever remember any cable / wire on any of my F100 brakes.

  7. Self-adjusters started in 65 but will fit clear back to 53. It's a common upgrade. Where is the adjuster access hole in the backing plate? You want to make sure it's in alignment with the adjuster wheel.

In the '60s - '70s, dozens of customers were paying us to eliminate all that stuff "so their shoes would last" ...

It is a camera angle optical illusion. The brake shoes are oriented correctly on the backing plate. Look at where the friction material ends on both ends of each brake shoe.

When you change to self adjusters, the access hole will not always line up. Did this to my '50 Ford Sedan. Also, make sure the piece that cable goes around is in properly. If it does not stay in hole, the cable will be loose.

  12. Correct. The way I posted that question was so OP would look and see that he needs to make a new slot in correct place. There is also a left hand and right hand threaded adjuster. They need to be on the proper side.

I would bet the adjuster is wrong too.

From what I can see the cable is loose because the adjusting arm is against the adjuster and can't turn the star because it's already tight and trying to tighten it even more.

The adjusting arm should be down and the star wheel should be able to turn with it not against it as it looks now. So to be sure you should be able to grab the star wheel and rotate the top of it out towards you and it should un-screw but I bet it gets tighter or shortens it.

  14. All self adjuster hardware for Fords are the same, only the cable length is different for the drum sizes.

Something is definitely off in that first picture. Maybe it is the guide-hole that is just off enough?

Well you can lead them to water but some times they don't understand how to drink.

The ALL WRONG part is that you have all the right hand side self adjuster linkage on the left hand side of the car. There is a specific left and right with the Ford adjuster pieces. Note the afore mentioned R on the adjuster lever.

The kit numbers are right for 11 inch brakes without seeing it with the hub off I can't tell. Screenshot (691).png Screenshot (689).png
