Technical What are you working on?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lloyd's paint & glass, Jul 18, 2022.

  1. I've been working on the backside of the 57 truck fenders, this thing must of lived on a gravel road because it's sure full of dirt.
    I trimmed the double panels and crevices with Eastwood's rust converter then gave it a coat of Por-15 primer, tomorrow it'll get a satin black topcoat.

    I've wired 2 cars using a Rebel 9+3 kit. First time was in my '39/pu with my former boss/mentor (RIP Ron. Really miss you) assisting and the install was flawless. The second was in my '54 Ranch Wagon that I did myself. Wiring isn't really in my wheel house but I was able to complete the job with only a couple of calls to tech support. I can't say enough good things about Rebel's tech support. YRMV,

    Another little update;
    Y-block Ford V8{ all Y-blocks Ford 239,272,292,312 have same set up.}
    Found the gasket,under the timing chain cover to block,were water pump feeds the block on both the right n left, had failed on right side<Ford designed a weep grove around the block water feed from water pump =So was leaking out weep grove,just above fuel pump bose in timing chain cover. I'm guessing do the real bad over heat n movement that made happen! Hope this is the last prob. Plan on driving again,next week.

    Y-Ford front pulley has to come off*,too remove ,clean and replace gaskets n cover.< That was a much bigger job,do to not owning a puller made for Ford Y. I got it off,but it took almost 3 hours. Making my own Y type puller,an addingg to design a few times,before it worked.

    At least when I drained n checked oil=zero water was in oil< I'll replace with new oil anyway n filter { High zink}.
    Time for a nap. 83 yo, go go is thin n short.

    Made some simple standoffs to attach adel clamps to hang the fuel line, as I have done with the brake lines. I took this route because the chassis was built with randomly convenient 5/16” holes in a few places, so I took advantage of them. I get a lot of satisfaction out of making hardware:)

  9. Thanks for the tip. I, too, am referencing the Painless instructions as well as deciphering the Rebel instructions. I already have to re-do one of the basic wires coming from the fuse box. I'll get there eventually.

    Made up a one piece line from the pump to the carb on the Merc the rubber pipe came loose earlier in the year and peed fuel everywhere and I really don’t like the idea of that.

    After 5 months of no progress I finally sprung my Ranch Wagon from body shop hell. The guy did a good job of replacing the floors and repairing lots of rust and started on prepping the body. Then all work stopped and periods of radio silence. Pretty bummed at this point. Not sure if another body guy will want to pick up the project. I'll be 74 in April. Maybe time to either sell it as a stalled project or part it out. IMG_20250329_125452708.jpg IMG_20250329_125506883.jpg

    With a lot of help from my gofer, Alyn, I replaced the 3-piece (leaking at two of the joints and installed by someone else) gas line with a one-piece length of NiCopp. Measured that sucker quite a few times before I made the two bends from the frame to the fuel filter. This was probably the easiest thing we've done on this car. May not seem exciting to anyone else, but to us it means that we can go down the road with it without the car catching on fire.

    @Truckdoctor Andy - The shoebox Ford looks pretty solid. Tell us about it!
    It's a 1951, the last year of the 3, flathead?

    Don't give up now! You're on the home stretch. Find the video of Gene Winfield saying :Don't Give Up !

  18. We picked it up in Memphis yesterday, I traded a Harley for it. It is pretty solid, it does have some filler in it, but the trunk floor is good, and the rear floor looks good. It’s a Flathead V8 with a 3 on the tree. The video on Marketplace shows it running, although I don’t believe on all 8 cylinders. Chandler can’t wait to hear it run, but before we spend any money on the motor, a compression test will be in order. Our plan is to make it go, make it stop and drive it, thank you Anthony! @anthony myrick Chandler’s cousin is pushing for a 302 Ford and 303 3 speed because he’s a Ford guy and he has those pieces to sell. I’m sure it will be a Small Block Chevrolet because we love them and Chandler has a 350 he just disassembled. Shoebox Central also has the mount kit too. When we picked it up, it was being stored at a shop in Memphis called Steel Rose Metal Company. Mike, the owner took us on a tour of his shop, neat place, they do cool work.

    Thanks for the encouragement. Not going to make a hasty decision. Need time to reflect on the situation before deciding what to do.

    So do I. Was complete and running before the journey to body shop hell. All the chrome is redone, stainless polished and straightened, rebuilt 302/AOD combo, Maverick 8 inch with new 350's, front discs, 12 volt rewire, knee knocker a/c, etc. Hoping I can get it down the final stretch but if not it'll make a good project for someone.
