If you want to see street rods, got to Florida. I think a lot of them belong to guys who either built or bought them when they were in style and aged along with them.....

When I was looking for my 40 coupe about 5 years ago what was being offered was enough to make you puke. A lot of the cars offered then looked like they built by Ronald McDonald. Pastel colors, Tweed interiors over many times I assume were seats they found in pull it yourself yard. Wheels UGH. Thankfully I found mine that was built about 20 years ago. It's Bud approved.

That issue has been on top of my toolbox for the last 3 years that I've been working on my A roadster. Bud's car was an inspiration for me ever since he started building it...

Bud Bryan, Spence Murray, Tom Medley, Pat Ganahl, and many unnamed others, are the guys that lured me in. I can’t thank them enough. They gave me direction and purpose when I really didn’t have any. Although I have always loved old cars, I didn’t know shit about how to make one look right, and be mechanically acceptable, that is until those guys took me and so many others under their wing and tried to teach us us through words and pictures what they had learned through their many experiences. I wish Bud smooth sailing for the rest of his journey, his contributions are countless, his roadsters are, and were , the coolest.

  8. At one time there was a poster printed of this line up without the lettering.

There’s a 38 page recap, not sure if all the text and photos were included from the original series but nonetheless it is comprehensive.

^^^^ This is the one that @Jalopy Joker is looking for. It doesn't have all the stuff from the original build, but covers most of it.

This is one of those instances where the words Street Rod in a thread aren’t getting a bad rap. :p

If you look closely at Jalopy Joker's post #6, the roadster pictured at the very bottom is not Bud Bryan's 1929 roadster. The roadster at the bottom is my roadster that I built several year's ago and that picture was taken at the 2008 Detroit Autorama when I had the roadster on display there. Somehow over the years that picture has become associated with the life and times of Bud Bryan.

I guess it is time for some background information here. When I was in high school, my good friend and I would hang out together, share our common interest in hot rods and look for the latest issue of Rod & Custom when it would appear on the magazine rack at Smokey's right next to the high school. I would follow all the R & C 1929 highboy monthly builds with great interest and I also have every Rod & Custom magazine associated with the Bud Bryan roadster. Now the Street Rod Nationals was coming up in Memphis Tennessee and my friend and I decided to go. So there we were, two high school kids hitch hiking down to Memphis Tennessee from Toronto Ontario Canada. Surprisingly it only took a little over a day to get to the fairgrounds in Memphis. I looked for the Bud Bryan roadster knowing full well that it would be there. Finally there it was coming down the road towards us. This car was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and I spent hours looking at it just in awe. Being just a kid at the time I was just plain star struck in seeing Bud Bryan in person and was just deathly afraid to say anything to him at all. I took all kinds of pictures of the Bud Bryan roadster and then we headed back home.

A 1929 roadster body came up for sale in the local newspaper. I convinced my father to take the truck down to where it was and look at it, knowing full well that this 1929 roadster body would be coming home with us no matter what condition that it might be in. The body came home and several years passed, in fact many more years passed. Work finally began on making my own Bud Bryan roadster. I had collected parts for many years, in getting the same parts as Bud Bryan had. Bit by bit the roadster finally came together and after many years of waiting I finally had the roadster I had always dreamed of.

I had Mark Kirby from Dundee Michigan build the 59A flathead engine for the roadster. Mark wanted a few things on the engine done his way and in tribute and respect for Mark, I have left the few things on the engine just like they were even though these changes were not on the Bud Bryan roadster. Everything else piece for piece is what Bud Bryan's roadster looked like.

I see now that Bud Bryan is in failing health. If someone could PM me his phone number, I would like to give him a call and tell him about my roadster and how much he has influenced my life and others like me while I still can. This is my story and a life long dream of owning my own Bud Bryan roadster.
