  4. Increased lead levels in the fuel is in my feeble memory. :) There were some other components as well. Ethyl was what premium was always referred to in my part of the world.

Thanks for posting that video. Seeing that ad as a kid I had to have the foot gas pedal. So when I turned 16 and got my gto I put one in (still in the car today), and because I can’t grow up I put one in my 39 when I built it.

Everyone had their own cute name for it; Gulf No-Nox, Esso Extra, Texaco Sky Chief...but the best was Sunoco 260.

A buddy of mine has a new old stock 1960s era Sunoco gas pump sitting in his garage. It has the dial on the side where you can select your octane.

There is no way to combust conventional hydrocarbon fuels without producing NOx.

To go further, any combustion process with sufficient temperature will produce NOx compounds, no hydrocarbons required. It is just because air is 80% N2. So even if we were to convert to an exclusively H2 fuel supply, we still get N2.

You could always get rid of all the nitrogen. Not very practical, but effective!

Get an oxygen concentrator and reduce the amount of N2. It would be a big sucker, however, not like those advertised on tv for people who need oxygen therapy…

Like all the conventionally controlled emissions, NOx is threshold-dependent. That is, there is a concentration and rate of emission below which atmospheric NOx can be wholly broken down via the natural nitrogen cycle. We are currently way over that threshold, and industry as constituted by almost a century of industrial policy and half a century of regulation needs us to stay way over the threshold.

The sane solution is to get under that threshold. How is another debate.

Thunderstorms make nearly as much NOx as cars. Stop thunderstorms!

Dang, as a kid I remember Ethyl on the pumps. Also recall HiTest.
