Clarence in front of Spencer Station. Buildings currently undergoing restoration. On original Rt. 66 about 20 miles west of Springfield, Missouri. b-t-w; that pavement is original concrete that's never been paved over. This was on the way home from the 2024 SK-500. It was raining that day but I didn't get to choose the weather.

In front of some black marks I did not make. There was a cruise night last night. This car would not leave these marks.:)

upload_2025-4-2_4-16-21.png In front of one of the earliest TRACT houses built in So Cal around 1946. They were very small styles of homes. Most two bedrooms stucco usage for exterior and one or a two car garage. The neighborhood had large front yards and also a larger backyard with an included clothes drying area with wires prehung on metal "T" poles.

It was a unusual tract as it was all single family homes. But, across one of the western location cross streets, there were multiple family apartments, duplexes and plots of land to build larger homes. Then the location was ripe for access to one of the largest industrial buildings and companies to attract those living in the small homes for jobs or ownership.

    Hello,

When my wife and I were married, we piddled around in two odd ends of the spectrum. One was a 1965 Red El Camino and a 1962 silver blue Corvair Coupe. One was left over from early college days and the other was a first time car for a high school girl. But, they both saved us in the long run, due to both having been paid for and now, there was no significant cost for car ownership.
upload_2025-4-2_4-25-40.png One was used for hauling auto parts, a couple of 250cc desert racing motorcycles on the weekends, and a surfboard or two, 40 miles South for some great surfing adventures. The other was a daily driver to high school and college for 4 years.

    upload_2025-4-2_4-26-20.png
But, when we got together as college friends, then got married after we graduated, that sealed the deal. Now, those two cars were our first cars as a couple of 20 somethings wandering all over So Cal.

So, one day we drove to San Diego to buy a 46 Ford Woody project with a 283 and 3 speed stick. It was to be our company vehicle to showcase the photo business. So, we were happy, had the money saved up and were off, driving down the coast to San Diego. We even made an offer, so the owner reserved it for us.

As it worked out, the owner was a butt-head and would not accept a check, as he said he would on the phone. It was a Sunday and all banks were closed back then on the weekends. So, there was no place to go to cash a check, especially for the price asked. I called a friend in San Diego who knew the owner and offered to back my story and check, with his credibility. Still a no-go. So, we kissed off the choice of a Woody and looked elsewhere.

We found another project (A 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery) and drove it wobbly, home to check things out. It was perfect for us and our new adventures. But, it took a series of several months of work, repair, and replacing a lot of parts to get the whole thing running well and be safe. It was almost a full year of work prior to feeling safe to drive down the coast highway.

Once it got back on the road, it was difficult to get my wife out of the driver’s seat. She loved the look, the sound and performance, as well as the handling/braking. Plus, she loved the A/C at all times. So, she drove it to our mom’s house in Long Beach.

I still had two cameras, one for B/W photos only and one loaded with color slide film.

We stayed in the small, old house until moving out, but our mom stayed in it from 1953 to 1998. There were very few repairs over the years of growing up. But, for a growing family of 4 with two teenage boys, a separate room was added to provide a study area for us. Also, my brother and I converted our backyard recreation room into a hot rod/mini speed shop workplace, with a new lift up garage door.

Would we go back to that neighborhood again, today? ... not in this lifetime…
But, only in our memories plus old photos from our family files...

Early history from 1957-58, Westside of Long Beach:
