Inspired "Moon" tank $0

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dolmetsch, Oct 26, 2006.

  1. Working on my /6 senior dragster I reached the point where I needed to fit and mount a gas tank. I wanted the right look though, you know, a little round moon tank style sitting up front just ahead of the engine. I checked the web. Even used ones were going for $80+ US and the 2 gal variety were hard to find. I thought about making one and would have until i had a light bulb moment. Didnt those junky little compressors every hardware store is selling have 2 gal round tanks? And didnt my brother have one that he bought from a friend cause it wouldnt work after about an hours use? I emailed him and he answered back. Yes he had one . It was almost new but junk. He would leave it on his stoop for me in the morning. I could have the dumb thing. Didnt work anyway. Today i picked it up. I needed four bungs in mine for my set up of 6 snowmobile carbs on the ol slant 6. I needed a supply bung for the fuel pump. Yup there is a bung there used for the water drain. I removed the feet and pump ***embly brackets from the tank. Pay dirt. Three more bungs on the top. One for the vent, one for the return line (Tilottsons need a return line ) and one for the primer feed. It was on the top of the tank but it is a small line anyway so i can make a drop line soldered inside a br*** fitting to go to the bottom of the tank and fitting the inverted flare line connection on top so it was no problem. I took some white paint and painted a couple of Moon eyes on the tank just to see if it had the character i was after. Looking good!!!!
A quick trip to CTC netted me a 1 1/4" threaded pipe and a matching pipe cap. Tomorrow i will make the hole for the filler pipe and weld it in. I will try to take some pictures. I am betting it turns out great. So far it cost me $5.19. I can paint it fake aluminum which is pretty good nowadays and it will do the job fine I think. I am betting there are lots of these units out there that worked just long enough so they cant go back. Check the yard sales, etc or better yet look for a similar sized air pig. Someone has to have them. We shall see how tomorrow goes.

That's Great!! I was thinking of a mock small moon tank for coolant overflow to put in front of my radiator for my HJ. That's sounds like the cat's ****. My other thought was to get a small Heineken keg, empty it one night and use that. I like the compressor tank idea better. Thanks!!!!

  4. You should've took pics and posted them!!!

  5. I will, In the morning.

Not perfect maybe but pretty close. I dont speak Dutch but deutsch and it is close in this saying. ). It was all over Holland when i was there this summer. Heinecken Hollands Secret Weapon. It was when they were winning at Soccer.
Anyway I will take the pics and post them. Don

  6. Good thinking on the Compressor/Fuel tank.

As far as overflow tanks go, take a look in a cooking store for a stainless pot.
Some of the 'hot table' pots have a small diameter and deep draw and come close to the size of the gennie Moon firewall mount overflow tank.

A piece of stainless welded or JB Welded to the back, the rim drilled for mounting holes, a filler if you like and a bung or two would do it.

Some of the professional stainless cooking pots (sans handles) would make some nice aircleaners for multi-carb installs.

Like Dolmetsch shows, you just need to apply your imagination....

Yeah, but some of those professional cooking pots are friggin astronomical in prices ... It's a cool idea, and they come in nifty shapes and highest quality high-temp stainless steel, but $125 for a saucepan?! Sheeit.

My lady and I were just looking at some "professional" cookware last weekend, and let me tell you, our WalMart/Target "specials" and hand-me-downs (thanks Mom!) are looking a lot better now.

  8. Here are a couple of views with tank brackets just cut off and ground and filler pipe and cap sitting on it. Tank is just sitting there but is pretty well where I want it. I am going to do the filler neck as soon as i finish here.

    Thats awesome! Great idea.

  10. Far as the stainless cooking pots et al go, keep an eye out at garage sales.

I've got a couple of stainless mixing bowls that work well for cleaning small parts.
Garage sale stuf, couple O' bucks each....

  12. Nice tech how to on the cheap.

  13. hole cut (Poor mans plasma cutter. A metal blade in my sabre saw after drilling a start hole.) stub is welded in and have done a bit of machining on the cap on my mini lathe to give it a techyer appearance. may paint it both colours to see which i like best before i give it a serious sand and paint. .
Looks like it will be fine.

I did something similar on my T coupe with an 11 gallon air tank. Hole sawed the top, welded in a piece of exaust tubing to work as a baffle, made a mounting plate for a flip top gas cap, and used the original air fitting bung as my fuel line hook up. I have about $40 in mine and that included buying a new air tank.

    Tank looks good Dolmetsch!

  15. Very cool. Great idea.

I'm surprised that no one has asked you what CTC is :D I miss CTC, there's just no equivalent down here.

Here's a tip for finding s/steel pots/pans etc. Go to the local Goodwill/SalvationArmy/Habitat for Humanity recycle centers..I've gotten a lots of pans that I use in my shop for cleaning parts...I've found lots of s/steel roaster pans, some s/s medical trays (great for spreading out carb parts after cleaning them) ,s/s restaurant pans , etc...always dirt cheap compared to new...and the money goes for a good cause Stan

  20. Used restaurant supply places usually have a ton of pots and pans and such, cheap. Good place to find steel tables, lockers, shelving and stuff too. They're cool places for mad scientist-types like us to prowl around too.

I like the aluminum color better too. I wouldn't add the mooneyes on that color.

  24. That's pretty ******* cool. What if you cut some brackets out of flat aluminum, see the pdf sketch below. Can't figure out the AutoCAD to jpg thing.

Wonder how it would look sanded to bare steel, smoothed. polished and cleared?

  26. Probably wouldn't last long without rusting, maybe treat it with Gibbs Brand. http://www.roadsters.com/gibbs/
I got a half case, sprayed it on half my surface rust-covered cowl, it actually had some paint under there! I'll post pics after I hang my new lights in the shop.

  27. Layout for the brackets is already done.(I used the cardboard method and then transferred it to the steel sheet ala spray paint over the pattern) i will cut them tomorrow. They are not aluminum. Cant afford that. My total budget for the whole project is $2500 and i think i am going to come pretty close.
Tiime and imagination is a reasonable subs***ute for money i always say. I have lots of time and an overactive imagination but I am short on gold . I bought 1 4x8 sheet of 1/8 mild steel and that has to supply all the brackets , the firewall and the drivers area floor.
Actually this project is a lot of fun and very relaxing. I am enjoying it.
