ok i have another question...before my other is off the page..must be a slow night...anyways.. what is the difference between a 40 ford and 46 ford style truck cab...will the front fenders and hood interchange?... thanks zach
The 46 has a different frame. Parallel leaf springs and a different wheel base ahead of the firewall so the sheet metal will fit either cab but not either frame By the way, the '46 front end looks a gazillion times better with a custom horizontal bar grill.
im talking about the 1/2 ton trucks....what became the f-1 in 48...the smallest size truck......heres what im thinking of doing....48 frame...46-47 cab, bed, rear fenders.....40 hood and front fenders...any thoughts on if that would work out well..i have the 48 frame and all running gear but no body parts...im trying to build a daily driver...and i have everything except a body...rebuilt 302 with a c4 is the only new parts...rest is stock from a 48-50 ford truck..just the darn body...and i like the 40's better then the 48-52's which would fit the frame thanks zach
Ive been down that road. My 43 1/2 ton begged for throwing away that ugly 42-7 nose and replacing with 40-1. Since the frames are a bit different there is some cowl work as well as running board work needed. Now, the 48-52 F-1 frame & cab is quite different again(same wheelbase as 42-7)and I havent a clue what sort of work is needed or even possible. The 42-7 tread width is 58" front and 60" rear, I cant find the F-1 spec. However the F-1 axle has a seperate part # and does not show a Hollanders interchange with the earlier. The F-1 frame width is 32" outside at the front and 34" rear, this time I dont have 42-7 specs! Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks.
thanks, do you have any pictures of what you had to do to the cowl to make it fit....ive yet to have them both side by side to compare....the frame really isn;t a problem..i have a front half of a 37 frame i could splice into the rear half of the 48 frame...or i could just build my own frame....my main concern is how the body parts match up....without a ton of modifying.. thanks zach
[ QUOTE ] ...i have a front half of a 37 frame i could splice into the rear half of the 48 frame... thanks zach [/ QUOTE ] Now you're on the right track. Body mods are easy, just fill in the gaps!
The frame is different, so the radiator support and all that junk goes out the door, 42-47 the bed is about 2" wider, if not it's the fenders that are wider. the hood bolts right in.
There is some bad or incomplete info here. A 17 yr old kid showed up here wanting to build a 40 Ford pickup and we are doing it. The cabs were the same from 1940 to 1947. Tiny differences include the front fender mounts on the 46-7. We drilled out the spot welds on the 46/7 mounts and removed them. Then we used the 40 fender mounts and drilled new holes for the fender to cowl. The fenders and hood bolt on, no problem. After 1941, the bed got three inches wider. Rear fenders are interchangeable from 1938 to 1947. Some are indented for spare tire. You can use the wider bed, just fix the running boards. The 1946/7 frame is longer in front and would project thru the front fenders, I dont know anything about fitting this cab/fender combo onto a 48 frame. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<<<< Cars have motors>>>> Motors are electrical. Engines are internal combustion and steam....... Yes, its the Ford MOTOR Company. It goes right back to FatHacks post about the mis-use of the langauage. No matter how many magazines call a car a Cabriolet, its not one unless it has door windows. No matter what you do to a 46/7 grill, you still have those awful ugly front fenders. An Art Instructor told me that the concept of Beauty can not be taught--either you understand the concept or you dont. Thats why we see those gawd-awful abominations on ebay.
The pre 42 rear fenders had the spare on the passenger side, 42-7 on the drivers. The 42-7 bed had the mounting holes higher to compensate for the difference in frames. You can also adapt 38-40 car front metal but since the shape of the cowl is different it requires a bit of fab work. Ive a friend who put a complete 38 car nose on his 47, tilt and all. A real head turner but he went over to the Darkside with a 502. No updated pix on mine yet as it is all apart. I had hoped to have the 324 Olds in this spring but this broken leg has screwed my schedule up big time. Here it is the day I towed it home.
Thanks for the information guys. I’m picking up a 46 1/2 ton but I don’t much care for the front end. Planning to swap the front sheet metal to something else.
