I am looking to replace my carburetor with an aftermarket EFI throttle body kit. Can I hear some recommendations from those who have done it. Give me the good and bad. Thank you.
Moved to the off topic forum. The Hamb focuses on 1965 and older cars built in the style popular in 1965 and before. You can find the rules for posting here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/the-h-a-m-b-rules-guidelines.44274/
I have 5 vehicles with Megasquirt. I am pleased with it. My son does my tuning though. He has my 65 Mustang running Alpha N at startup and switching to Speed Density above 1500 RPM.
several years ago I put a fitech system on my wife's Dart. I didn't like it, we ended up selling the car. Didn't want to start and idle easily. Didn't find any way to adjust it.
A friend used to work at a small Hot Rod shop. After MANY bad experiences, it got to the point where the ONLY kit they would install or work on is the Edelbrock (all versions). The car doesn't matter. Mike
Joe Simpson on YouTube did a comparo of different EFI systems. From Motec (most expensive) to Micrsquirt (the least expensive) with pros and cons of each. I have had both Holley Sniper (TBI) and now Holley Terminator (mpfi). They both ran really nice. The Terminator is more flexible. There are a LOT of people who have had trouble with nearly all "entry level" systems such as the Sniper and Terminator. FI Tech too. 99.9% of the time is because of operator or installer error. My son did the wiring harness for my Terminator system from scratch, specifically for my application, and we sold off the harness that came with the unit. That is where most of the problems happen. Janky connections, bad grounds, no grounds, and general half-***ed installation will kill any system.
Did I mention my 68 Caprice is just the power plant inside a 39 Ford? I'm trying to focus on the actual power plant. Sorry for the confusion.
does not matter in this case because EFI is strictly off topic on the main board. Did you read the rules at the link I posted above???
I put together a Megasquirt system 10+ years ago. It was relatively inexpensive since I bought the kit and did all of the soldering, etc. Most of the other parts came from the junkyard (throttle body, fuel pump, crash sensor, temp sensor, etc). The system worked OK but I had a difficult time getting it tuned, possibly because I had never dealt with anything like it and so the laptop setup and software were challenging to me. The latest EFI conversion was a Holley Sniper. It was vastly easier to install and also considerably more expensive. The Sniper throttle body had a problem in that it continually flowed fuel into the secondaries. We returned it to the factory and they replaced it for no charge, kudos to the Holley customer service. Since then it has been trouble free and is easy to tune. I especially appreciate the on dash read out that enables me to see what is going on with the system. I am considering replacing the Megasquirt with a Sniper.
I've installed a number of two and four bbl Holley Snipers with good results on all. I'm not a big fan of the fuel pump they supply with the kit (it's a bit noisy). Clean power, good grounds, and a good fuel return are essential. Some say that a 5/16" return is adequate but I've had better results with 3/8". If you can, use a hard line. Aluminum is easy to work with. The initial tune with the handheld will get you started but after you get familiar with all the EFI functions and terminology, the desktop software will let you dial it in more precisely, especially the cold start. I wouldn't try to use the ignition functions until you have the fuel sorted. Too many symptoms overlap and you could end up tweaking the wrong parameters.
I have an Affordable Fuel Injection on my straight eight Buick. ONLY problems have been self induced. Never go back. Carburetors are ok, just not with todays gas which is formulated for fuel injection. Ben
I had a holley sniper on and liked it but did have to deal with RFI. Im about to order an aces brand and install on my 50 pontiac with a 350 pontiac engine. Holley tech is difficult to get in touch with. Ive called aces twice already asking questions and someone picked up right away both times.
If you have a stock engine, I would suggest Affordable efi. That's based on a GM system with oem parts.
