We were there last Halloween for the Michigan-Oregon football game, our Henry Ford ticket included the assembly plant and Greenfield Village. Greenfield was neat, they will putt you around in a Model T or a '30 bus. Are you taking the Kids? They have a historic Merry go Round. All the buildings have interesting stories having been brought in from all over the country and a stone house from England. Wandered around downtown to check out the architecture and Buddy's Original Square Pan Pizza. We went across the river just to say we were in Canada. Motown, if you're into music is a must see. Dang, we didn't make it out to Gilmore, I'm jealous.

  5. If you work up an appetite, Vinsetta Garage on Woodward Ave. in Berkley is an interesting place for beer and burgers. Or pizza. Or gourmet mac and cheese.

  6. If Henry Ford's home Fairlane is open a must see. What a home and shop he had. Was the highlight of a cross country trip many years ago.

The Auburn Cord museum in Auburn Indiana is probably the same distance from Detroit as the Gilmore, both awesome places. There is also the Olds museum in Lansing, much smaller but interesting. Greenfield village is my favorite although I’m biased as I was the lead civil engineer for the renovation back in 03.

  11. Beat me to that.. but lots of stuff in Detroit area.

Detroit is a good place to get a Coney Island hot dog, there's also Greektown if you like Greek food. Lots of Middle Eastern restaurants too.

That baggage tug was found in the flooded lower level after millions of gallons of water were pumped out during the renovation, along with other interesting artifacts.

I found it interesting how some modern methods were used to recreate many of the building details done by old world craftsmen - 3D printing, etc - where some of those skills had been lost to time.

If you are near Wyandotte, Polonus has good homemade Polish food.

If you are downriver (Wyandotte/ Trenton) area, there are several riverfront parks such as Bishop Park in Wyandotte and Elizabeth Park in Trenton. The drive around shoreline of the island of Grosse Ile is nice take the free bridge in Trenton, there just isn’t any parks or pull over areas around the island. Up in Detroit there is Belle Isle although its now a State Park so there is a fee.

The burger joints are on my list as well!

  27. Actually, the place in Hamtramck is Polonia, the one in Wyandotte is Polonus. Years ago, Hamtramck had the largest percentage of people of Polish descent, in the Detroit area and Wyandotte second. Today, they might both have equal percentages.

  29. Many years ago, when my Dad used to take us to Tigers and Red wings games(Olympia, Tiger Stadium), we checked out a lot of the local points of interest. Need to take a trip just to get a refresh on those museums etc, and my wife loves Polish food.
