When it gets to nut-cuttin' time you have to say "this is what we are going to do" and be decisive and all that shizzle. The missus and I have decided that we are going to move to Houston by the middle of 2007. My job requires me to move alot, too much in fact. Houston has a regional office for my company and one for just about every single one of our compe***ors in the same industry. After getting our chain jerked for the last F'n time we decided to put down stakes in one spot come hell or high water. Mom and young'uns can stay in one spot and grow while I go about my project work for a couple more years and then "go inside" into the world of the REMF's (rear eschelon mo fo's). I'll have to get used to wearing a tie again, and take up golf, but **** happens. I know there is some car stuff in the 713 area, plus I will be that much closer to Austin. Looking at houses now, probably will make an appearance in December to actually see neighborhoods, etc.
Go for it. The beauty of the Houston area is that you can make a good living and real estate is not priced beyond the means of a 4 income family as it is here in Austin and they dont have the bug hugger problem that we have. I love it here in Austin but I do envy my family in Baytown sometimes, especially when it is time to pay my property taxes or get a building permit.
Houston is awesome...lived in Baytown too, and ya a house there cost 47,500...no sh!t......Houston is cheap compared to other parts of the country...and its not really hot.....well depends how tough ya are...bahahahha
Houston is a kewl place to be "from" too!! I spent the first 23 years of my life there, graduated from Pasadena High, San Jac, and U of H. Every place has plus -es and minus -es, ...and all is how you perceive it. Go there and make yourself a great living, and THEN move to an area where the taxes and weather aren't so brutal when you have am***ed your wealth. My Dad made a great living in the petro-chemical industry down there for years. Seven or eight years ago he sold his car collection down to about 25 cars and bought 5 acres here in eastern 10-uh-C. In Tejas, his property taxes for the house and a couple of 40x40 buildings was over $4K annually. Here he has a 40'x60' block workshop, an 1800 sq. ft. new house with a full size drive under ba*****t that is climate-controled for his restored stuff, --and he got aggravated because his property taxes will now be $800.00 annually this next year. The Houston area is now something like the 3rd or 4th largest metro area isn't it? If so, that means that about anything you could ever want is in town. I remember things like year-round car shows, and a swap meet every weekend for four and five months straight if you were willing to drive a hundred miles or so. I guess that is what I didn't care for the most --but didn't know it until I moved away from there. Where I live now, an 8 hour drive to the West puts me in Memphis, 8 hours to the North puts me at Hershey, 8 hours to the South puts me into Florida, and 8 hours to the East puts me WAY into the ocean. To me, it seems like you must drive a long way just before you can go anywhere when everything is either in a North, or N/E or N/W direction. I suppose if that is all that one can find aggravating, then someoe needs to be counting their blessings! Gosh I may keep on and talk myself into moving back! Nahhhhhhhhh... Best wishes on your new adventure in life!!
Friendswood is a suburb of houston, where I grew up. Very nice. No offense to Brent, but you don't want to live in Pasadena NOW, it's gotten pretty rough. Houston area has the most affordable housing in the country, I heard on the radio recently. I hope you move close to Galveston and the beach(about 30 mi. out of town), I have yet to meet any H.A.M.B.ers down here.
pasadena is known as stinkadena. here's a short summary of houston: traffic sux floods in some neighborhoods every time it rains summers are brutal other than that it ain't bad. good luck!
League City is still going on, very spotty by all reports though. Deer Park, just east of 'dena, might be worthy of consideration. Much nicer than Pasadena, cheap housing, 20 min. to downtown, plenty of gearheads and lots of mechanically inclined and skilled folks in the area. I've spent a lot of time there at my friend Richard's place and only very rarely have gotten a whiff of refinery. lots of older tract housing available and substantial new development as well. Costs about half as much to live there compared to the Heights where I live. It may be hot around here but likely not worse than Borger.
.............................................................................................................The places you play golf are great.. I ride my dirt bike and drive my dunebuggy on them very often ..
Ditto to that. And then you will have only a short drive to the Cruze night at Jimmy's place the first Sunday of every month, on White Oak Blvd. at 2:00 p.m.
Spring or the Woodlands area is the ****. Right in the sweet spot. I'm ten minutes from the beltway and thirty minutes from downtown. No floods and plenty of shade trees. Far enough away from water to matter but not to far to tote a boat if I want to.
I went to school at AI Houston, Lived just off the Fiftyniner and worked in West U. Best day in my life was when I packed up Old Blue and left. I don't even like p***ing thru to go to Galveston.
***** Friedman promises to lower my property taxes and de-wussify Texas, plus he's a Jew so he'll hire good people. So I have that to look forward to. I have been looking at the north and northwest parts of Houston right now, that is where all of the houses with the requirements I have keep showing up. Since this will be the house we stay in for many years I will get something I want with the space I need and a 15 year fixed rate so I guess I will be paying in the neighborhood of $1500 a month. I have eliminated my credit card debt so I can do that. I'm done living in a broom closet and wondering where all of my $$$ is going, whew... I will get something with a three car garage, the rest of the house is the missus' choice. wingnutz, yeah cheeseland is out, too much indecision on the company's part, plus the rumor mill has it that this particular project is not career enhancing.
try south florida prices lol its waaaaay to much to live here thats why we are movin back to austin in july
