Hey guys can I get yalls expert opinion on something?? I've got a pontiac 350 in my '50 pontiac. I put new rings, rod bearings , main bearings and cam bearings in. Just kinda a cheap overhaul. New oil pump and gaskets as well. It runs great. No noises and runs smooth. The question is. It has about 30lb oil pressure at idle cold. About 10 at idle hot. It goes up nice and. Smooth as soon as you rev it. I have a 700r4 in the car so it cruises as about 1900 rpm on the highway with 30-35 lbs of oil pressure. Does this sound ok to yall? I guess my concern is the kinda low idle pressure. Thanks in advance guys.
In 1965, Pontiac's used a low oil pressure light when the pressure got to low, the sensor was set to turn on the light at 3 to 4 psi of pressure.
Oil FLOW is important, pressure is just how much isn’t able to flow, excess pressure is just wasting horsepower
What oil is in it and how old is it? Did always do this or has something changed? Could be oil pump, loose lifter bores, loose bearings, leaking oil galley plug...... would need to tear into to know for sure.
It should be good to go. You can try different weight oils if it's so worrying that you don't drive it, but as said, 10 PSI per 1000 RPM has been a rule for decades. Chasing the issue is going to consume time and money with little to no benefit, so long as the bearings have proper clearance.
