It's amazing when you realize the amount of work you made for yourself by inadvertently swapping springs #37 & 39 in a Hydro... now I get to put the mess back together.

  2. You are a better man than I! I’m not allowed to open up transmissions anymore. I just swapped out the Saginaw 3 speed in Papaw because it jumped out of first gear and had a terrible shimmy in reverse. Lloyd gave me another Saginaw and all I did was change the rear seal and install fresh oil. It works perfectly. The first Saginaw I took completely apart and resealed it. Apparently I missed something because it jumped outta first gear. Nope, no more transmissions for me. There is a good rebuilder in St. Louis we use at work. Thank you so much Lloyd for the transmission!!

Being I got the plasma cutter up and running we have the CNC cutting table working again. So we cut out some brackets for alternator mount and throttle cable brackets cut out.

got the oil pick up height figured out. About to tig it with some bronze.
Finished up porting these performance exhaust manifolds to match the later port size.:)
If I use these valve covers one will need clearanced on the inside to clear the head casting.
    IMG_5727.jpeg
Adjusted the progressive linkage to clear the dizzy. (Not pictured)
Gotta figure out how I’ll finish the carbs. Thinking about dipping em in the aircraft “anadozing” stuff.
Gotta blast the timing cover and pan.
Decide on a color. Red or black.
Car had a red flatty when I bought it.

More progress! After sawing 1/4 inch off of the header bolts and shimming the front motor mounts 3/8", I finally got these headers in place. Some bolts went in easy; some went in 1/6th of a turn at a time. No room for sockets. Now, on to the pipes.

    Driver's side, we got clearance.

    Alan,

At least you got yours in with 1/6 turn at a time. I usually wind up having to do 1/12 turn at a time.

I took the time to remove all the rough surfaces with files, a DA, sandpaper.
I used epoxy primer to fill the remaining low areas and block sanded, then spot primed any bare spots.
Painted with urethane and mid temp activator. The temps in the garage made for a successful day! IMG_3595.jpeg IMG_3597.jpeg IMG_3599.jpeg IMG_3596.jpeg

  16. I got my other fender painted

    20250418_150005.jpg

And in between the steps in that I started removing the bolts and linkage to pull the carbs to rejet and pull the top of the tunnel ram off to make a new gasket for that

A simple like isn’t good enough.
Thanks to All of you folks who share the detail photos of the things you are building.
Some things, like a radiator hold down, or spark plug wire routing, or any aspect of fabrication really, may seem simple, but, are an education for guys like me who learn so much from the things you post.

Your pointer is too short. :)

  24. IMG_9280.jpeg IMG_9279.jpeg Little Truckdoctor and I built a bracket for the electric fan on Papaw. I just couldn’t bring myself to use the push through the fins plastic ties that came with the fan. The pictures are from the still mocking it up phase, if you pay close attention, the fan motor is contacting the water pump pulley. IMG_9279.jpeg

  25. Andy, Are you sure that’ll hold the fan? Looks a little light.:)

I set the body on again so I could route the parking brake cables and decide on the placement of a lever since I ended up with a straight pull handle.
Then I fabricated a floor for the spare tire cavity that was lost to the tank. I made it removable so I will have access to the fuel sender and plumbing. When I thought I was only going to build smalls like my avatar I picked up a 24" brake, so for this piece I had to split it and butt weld the halves to get straight sharp bends. And then the tire cover as the gas door. I'll vent with a rollover to the fender well.

Makes it easier to adjust the pointer which is easier than loosening the wheel to adjust.

  28. Lane, when I was involved in restoration of antique International Harvester tractors, Dad and I toured Kinze Manufacturing in Eastern Iowa. They build tillage, planting, and grain handling equipment. The man who started it as a welding shop in 1965 is Jon Kinzenbaw. His motto is “When in Doubt, Build it Stout”. I really like it, so I adopted it. That, and I was able to get the steel at work! :D

  29. Better to overbuild than to underbuild, scrap the first, and maybe second and third versions trying to sneak up on it.
