Great that the kids have a mentor like you to peak their interest in swapping engines and building cars.

Fast cars when I was a kid were owned by people out of their teens who actually had jobs and money they could spend. Fast cars for us teens were usually stock or had a cam and some carbs......but they were a whole lot slower than todays cars. My grandson called me last week and his 17 year old friend was killed in an accident and another friend got a broken back. Don't know the details on the car, but it was more about the kid getting drunk and running off a curve. Its a terrible thing when some young man loses his life due to a momentary bad decision. The kid trusts you, talk to him and draw him a mental picture ..........we all thought we were invincible at that age. The cars are much faster these days.

Again, kudos for being a mentor to the new generations............:)

12 years ago I met a 16 year old gal, with a pretty nice Camaro, on Drag week.

Last year, she got second place on Drag Week, with a 6 second 55 Chevy.

Maybe some kids can handle it?

Great job with your students Anthony!

After thinking about it I drove a car with a roll cage to high school too. It was only a Baja bug, but still… It was a retired race car with a black iron cage and bumpers. I bought it from the garage owner after he switched to a rail buggy race car. I put a stock 1200 engine with tee-pee headers. At vocational school I had the weld shop do some repairs to the cage. My teacher (body shop) talked me into letting one of the other students paint it so he could get the grade for all-over paint jobs. He donated a gallon of donated school paint (yellow). The mechanics vocational teacher didn’t think it was safe since it had jig sawed fenders and pretty poor headlamp installation, but all the teachers were interested in everything the students were driving.

I will watch reaction videos now and then. One guy was talking about Mike Oldfield and how this 'kid' came up with a composition that was so unique, complex and different, not to mention the musical prowess of playing most of the instruments.
Us older folk often remember the foolishness and immortal ways we acted, but forget the great expansion of thought and boundless courage. He said that he's seen many people that age make great leaps creatively and intellectually.
Don't fall into the fallacy of age grouping everyone. There are a lot of Boomer jokes pointing out the stereotypical things younger people see as failings too. It can be a way to simply categorize, but there are always people and things that defy the norm.

We used to all pitch in and then go buy a junker. Fix it up all week to make it run and stop, borrow a set of plates, then go drive and thrash it till it died. We’d leave it where it died and take the plates back and leave them in the yard where we borrowed them. After all it’s not like we were criminals. Our real names wasn’t on the paperwork and the junkyards didn’t care as they got it back to sell again. Never got in trouble doing it. Kids don’t try this yourself. We were highly trained delinquents.

  13. Or perhaps by encouraging and supporting his car hobby they are giving him something to focus on and stay out of trouble? Nah!

Daughter grew up helping older brother & I work on cars. At 16 did “high school drags”. Learned to drive safe. Kid in her glass given new VW. First day, took friends on “hell ride” ( his term ) to show how fast. Third trip rolled into a field killed one injured two. Teach respect & responsibility
