Sometimes any name at all can be a bit cringe, but I think that on anything in a show idiom a name is necessary. I drew a series years ago reimagining the Wacky Races cars as '60s/'70s show rods. My interpretation of the Boulder Mobile was rather early-mid '60s, so I called it the Primordian.

While I don't name cars, a lot of great cars have names and you can picture them in your mind immediately when they are called. Deora, Silhouette, Uncertain-T, Lil' Coffin, Emperor, Boothill Express, Outlaw, Matador, I'm sure that lots more could be added to this.

    Hello,

Teenagers always had a fast reaction to something they did not like or made them laugh. The teenage bantering always went on during any hot rod gatherings on a Friday/Saturday night. After the burgers/fries and Cherry Cokes, the bantering began. So, one who grew up with a Flathead 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery that was supposed to be painted a “racer orange” that ended up a popular name: “salmon pink,” took the ribbing in line with all of the other bantering going on in the drive in restaurant parking lots.

It never got too bad, otherwise, the brash talker was on the ground. We were all guilty of the quick replies and thought up names for just about everything from girls to cars to waitresses that gave us a bad time. That was not mean, it was just the local teenage conversations and friendly way to ridicule someone else, get the replies back and all laugh together as friends. Ha!

    Jnaki

One day one of our friends drove in his cool red 1940 Ford Sedan with a Buick motor, a tall stick shift along with his white tuck and roll upholstery. We all knew it was not a below the border upholstery job, but one done just down the street in Bixby Knolls. So, the cost was something most did not have, but we all appreciated it, since it looked outstanding in his Ford Sedan. Compared to our sleek Chevy sedans in a different way, the red sedan looked rather bulbous to some.

Then later that night, a black 1946 Ford Sedan came rumbling into the parking lot and we did not know who it was. The rake was standard low in front, the motor sounded good and the faces staring back were unknowns. So, we all stared back. The admiration of another hot rod was good. The two couples inside the sedan looked at everyone and then exited the driveway. As they accelerated away, we all though that was a funny moment. I guess we did not look appealing or welcoming as they drove away. They did not even make the “alley” run back to the parking lot from around the block.

So, of course, we all started talking about the moment, the hot rod sedan and the girls. Someone said the sedan was too big and ugly, despite the shiny black paint. The small hubcaps on the black rims did nothing for the sedan. The motor sound was somewhat impressive, but when he accelerated, it was nothing to write home about. We laughingly told the red 40 Ford Sedan owner that it would have been a good race of old sedans.

The 40 sedan owner outright called the 46 Ford Sedan a “big whale.” Then we all laughed and said it still would have been a good race between the two old sedans. So, for us, the term big whale was used to describe any large old sedan, especially a 46 Ford.

A big whale? It actually looked like a big snail with the pop up arched shell…

The funny thing was our other friend had a purple 1946 Ford Coupe and he laughed as much as anyone. It was a good thing he had a coupe and not a larger sedan. YRMV

The 57 Fairlane 500 four door I pulled out of a pasture and got back on the road with help from some friends is named Annie . As I was cleaning out the years of rodent nest and poo I found the remains of a May 1967 Playboy magazine. The centerfold model is Ann Randoll . So I called the car Annie

One of my cars I call Ruby Baby from the song and lyric “She don’t love me but I love her just the same”. I also have a dune buggy/sand rail I call Wylie. From the Road Runner cartoons just seemed fitting. Another car I call Wild Ride from my wife’s suggestion after the Disney World “ Mr Toads Wild Ride”

A H.S. buddy liked to name my rides. The '56 Dodge was 'The Ramcharger'.
After a wild mishap one night the replacement '49 Dodge Wayfarer ( fluid drive ) was 'The Lambcharger'.
He, one time, challenged me to dragrace. He on shoe leather, had me for the first 20 feet.

This gal my daughter Kerri named the 48 Little Red truck in 1982 when this photo was taken and that turned to "Little" that has stuck to this day. For a while we had little and "Big" a 74 Chev K30 4x4 Crew cab that was an absolute beast that I wish I had never let go. It's still running around the Horse Heaven hills of Washington as far as I know. Kerri and the 48-XL.jpg

I named my Model A 'Ugly Betty' after seeing a beautifully done roadster called Betty. My car is cool, reliable, runs and goes down the road great, many of the attributes of the Betty roadster, but it isn't beautiful, it's an Ugly Betty.

I just use year or model name on my cars.
But a custom or hotrod need a name in my world.
So i had to come up with a name on my 27 coupe.
As it is a model T i am sure there is a secret law that demand that the name must have a capital T in it.
To make the car street legal in Sweden it must have all sorts of things that make it a modern streetrod.
So my take to the name was it is a new streetrod thats try to look as a cool old hotrod.
The first name that come up in my mind was "The Hipster".
But it did not feel right so i had to find another name.
Then they played "the great pretender" with the Platters on the radio.
So thats where i take my name to the coupe. "Great" feels a bit heavy so i change that to lil.
So "lil PreTender" is the name i came up with.

  24. My daughter named my '66 C10 "Rusty Gold" out of the blue one day...cause its original gold paint...and the other is obvious. Other '65 C10 is original 503 green and the wife thought it looked my the clay-mation Gumby character and the name stuck. Not much else around here has a name

Named my Austin gasser "Mouse Trap" simply because it's a SBC "mouse motor" trapped in a tiny body.

Years ago we had a '48 Ford two door sedan. It looked kinda dark brown most of the time. We had a friend and customer, and he said when he was a kid, they called these things "June bugs" after the little beetles that show up here in Texas every year. And, because of her shape, and color, we started calling her "June Bug", and " Juny, or Junie" or "Junee". We still refer her this way.

Just remembered another of the 'beater series'. A 4dr Maverick that would occasionally decide to shift itself from park to reverse without warning, especially at high idle warming up. Wanna guess?:D

My Dailey Driver is known as 'Black Sunshine' because it's black and looks angry.
