I have used tire black to paint white letters. It comes in a spray can and adheres well. Just a light coat, too much will crack making you think the side wall is cracking.

  2. I've used SEM trim black to cover white letters. The rear tires on my Roadster had white letters on the inside, I sprayed the trim black on them and it never cracked or came off. I drove on those tires for way more years than I should have. I think I've used SEM black upholstery spray too in the past.

Getting ready to groove the slicks. But I made a find in the voltage regulator issue. Seems the D618 has been the issue, it is the newer version, however it is made for higher amp generators. Precisely 26 to 35 amps.Well mine is a 25 amp generator. So did some digging, found I need a D617. No longer made!! eBay to the rescue. Found a never opened D617 regulator in the box. Got brave and bought it. Nice part it is easily adjusted. Like that idea. I get it next week, fingers crossed!

Got my voltage regulator today. Two days late, USPS delayed. Kinda fun opening a piece of the past. Pulled the string and popped the top. The smell was familiar, everything inside is mint. Next bolt it on and hope for the best!! PXL_20250312_154923381.jpg PXL_20250312_154916309.jpg PXL_20250312_154919585.jpg

That did the trick!! Love the adjustability, second time set it right in, plus I am going to add another ground to the regulator case for extra measure! No hot spots, sparks, etc. Gen and regulator stay cool!! Next thing is groove the slicks!

Finally getting back on the coupe. Had more generator issues. Had to replace the field coils, all is well now. Here's my idea for grooving the slicks. Big long hose clamp, tighten down where you want it, use it for a guide for the grooving tool. Will try it tomorrow, wonder how bad it will smell? PXL_20250417_225608492.jpg

That’s clever, I’m curious if it would be easier to keep uniform depth if you hold steady and have a helper turn the wheel?

It doesn't smell too bad. I have done several sets for sand rails when I was younger. Just do it in a well ventilated area.

A few of those clamps would come in handy in that Idaho snow.

I doubt seriously my coupe will ever see snow while I own her! That would be fun but messy!

Tried a small section. Went like butter, speed is the main thing. Now it's time for the long cuts. My wife agreed to turn the tire. Smell wasn't bad, fan helps. PXL_20250420_164304443.jpg PXL_20250420_164400585.MP.jpg

That looks great! My TC tires have a little hole in the tire, dead center, at 12:00 and 6:00 on each tire. Obviously, a mould mark or something. It is the only thing I don't care for. I tried filling them with black RTV but it doesn't stay in under driving conditions. Do your tires have such a thing?

I have holes around both tires. They are a certain depth. When the holes disappear from loss of tread, it's time for a new set tires soon. That's the depth I made the grooves. PXL_20250420_174924389.MP.jpg PXL_20250420_174915355.jpg

Those blind holes are usually wear indicators.

Yep, referred to as "check holes" by drag racers. Shallow check holes mean your wallet is about to get thin.

Went around turning the tire myself. Didn't like the way the groove came out. So next try will be the 1/2" blade between two clamps and my wife turning the tire. I learned the angle which you hold the cutter must stay consistent or the depth varies. PXL_20250420_201822066.jpg PXL_20250420_201814249.jpg

Update, didn't do so good on grooving the Radirs. My wife stepped in.
No illegal drag only slicks. OK, ordered two 1000x15, 29.5" Towel City Cheater Slicks, 4 grooves with angled cuts. I should get them by June. Guys at Towel City we're great! DIT number and all. New casings made by Goodyear! That will be the last piece, and I am on the road. Can't wait!! Oh yeah, black walls only!!!

Good folks, good tires. They'll groove them to your specs.

Ordered the custom grooving, love the look. Tried to convince myself to get different tires. The cheater slick look is for me. 1000x15, 29.5 diameter, plus the custom grooving, should look pretty bad ass. That tire is the same measurements as the old Radirs.
