My OT better gas mileage daily needs one that's not common used because of it's age and being a 5 speed. I've been looking at various places online but the reviews are rarely good. Anyone have any real world experience good or bad?
I've got an 02 B2500 van with 360 auto. This is not a common combo! It had previously had the ECU replaced under warranty, then it died again under my ownership. Factory no longer supports. Sent it off to a place in FLA and they had a month turn around and it worked, but poor to no communication and it's been a long time so I don't remember who they were and if they provide the service now. Best wishes, but you have to be careful.
We have used a few places local to me and also a “major rebuilder” out of NY state for electric forklift controllers and a few select ECM’s out of I.C units . Usually they get it right and it’s no issues . They all ask the same questions “ what’s the code “ what the issue/ symptoms “ intermittent or all the time etc etc .
From what I have learned, all the rebuilders do is replace capacitors if they are leaking. There are no aftermarket rebuilders that I'm aware of that reprogram any ecu. If you are looking for aftermarket tuning, that's a different item.
and you can replace capacitors yourself, if you have experience soldering printed circuit boards. If not, maybe someone you know, does.
Try these guys. PCM of North Carolina. sales@pcmofnc.com 704-307-4227 They reprogramed my ECM for my 2013 Suburban when I got rid of the DOD. New cam, lifters etc. Fast turnaround, maybe 4 days. Can't remember the price but it seemed reasonable. Give them a call.
What kind of car is it? If its a GM brand, there are lots of places/people who do that stuff.......even sell replacements that they have disabled the emission and vats stuff pretty reasonably. If its not a GM, it will be harder to find someone.
Too late. I have a friend that before he retired, he rebuilt most all factory ECM's and some aftermarket, depending on the problem. But like I said, He's retired. Mike
Toyota, huh? I watch Frankenstein Motorworks and he's real deep into those. He moves to halltech on the wilder stuff. That tells me the stock ECU is pretty locked down, but that's not what you are asking. I'd snoop on Toyota forums and see what they have to say. This place has great depth on knowledge, but a stock rebuild of an import ECU is going pretty far away from the focus here. I am not being flippant, I do hope you find an answer.
A follow up to this- ran into a local guy who use to be the go to guy for these kind of issues (now retired). Asked if he ever used any of the computer repair places, he had used a place in Illinois and hadn't had any issues. Boxed it up on Monday, tracking showed it's arrival at 10 am Wednesday. Called me Wednesday at 3 to say it was done, back in the car on Friday. It's only been a week but so far purring like a 2.2L kitten with no check engine lights in sight.
