There are two 1969 two seater AMX cars ( U.S. IMPORTED ) for sale here in the Netherlands. Both have some work needed. Both are 4 speed manual and both have what look like professional race car gas tank in the trunk. Should i get excited ? Otherwise they look stock except for a few extra sporty gauges. Who knows more about AMX cars ?
I'm not an expert on them, but they are pretty neat cars. They came with either a 343 or 390 cubic inch engine.
Always loved the AMX. Are any of the original gas tanks still there? Are they available aftermarket in the Netherlands? If it were me, I would want my trunk space back…
No room for golf clubs back there. No back seat though, plenty of room there. I love AMX's. Always wanted one.
Brother in law had a 1970, which I think is best looking AMX of all the years. Big Bad green 390, 4-speed, very cool car. Identical to this one….
Would the presence of the racy fuel tank give the idea that these two were used for Run What Ya Brung racing combined with the sporty add on gauges. The red car also has the battery in the trunk. Wondering.
If you are looking for something to drive and have fun with the fuel cell in the trunk may be OK. If you are looking at them as an investment, the fuel cell would be a huge distraction. To many things would need to be changed to take it back to stock, which is where the future value will likely still be.
They probably have fuel cells in them as the stock tanks were not available when the old ones went bad....
You could actually get them with the 290, 343, 360, or the 390 (all the same engine family). They were 2 seaters and shortened versions of the Javelin. The go faster version was called a Go Pack, and you could get them with side pipes. Very cool cars. In '71, AMX became a package on the regular Javelin and had a back seat like that car.
I dig them too. There has got to be a forum for them, they have a following. As for the fuel cells, negative not being stock, I don't know how that will affect your local inspections, if any. Most have foam inside that deteriorates over time, so check that. Also check mounting and line routing. Could be race mod, could be unavailable tank, as mentioned. If race, check for other mods. Here's a tank and other parts. Check quality before buying and importing! https://www.amclives.com/products/fuel-tank-kit-complete-1968-70-amc-amx-javelin You might be able to price out other things both cars need there. I have not dealt with them so I can't vouch for that place. Id look at forums and the old car manual project website to educate myself on what is stock, what is not. I know that era still had vacuum (off the top of the fuel pump) wipers or electric. I'd check that for sure. Different engines would affect value a lot here, I don't know about over there. Another thing to check is what is difficult or impossible to source. That might help choose between the two.
I have owned more than 20 of them. Parts availability is ok for the parts that are shared with other AMC cars. Some things have to be searched for. Specific AMX parts are difficult. The aftermarket support is spotty. If someone makes a run of parts it gets sold out quickly. If someone owns 2 cars they seem to buy enough parts for 10 cars. I never found a really good AMC chat room. I have not looked for one in a long time though.
As i stated, "should i be excited about these two ". Well to be honest excitement is dwindling . They will come up for auction here soon. No reserve and a low starting bid, 15 % auction fee. Then the small letters say "seller has the right to not award/can refuse highest bid " in other words no sale. Cars allready have import duties paid but never been inspected /registered here. You guys would,nt believe how many classic U.S. imports are being offered here, and thats just this country. Thats not counting the 240Zs or MG or Porsche , etc, etc that are coming from U.S.
Just an observation. Red one seems to be a quick re-spray paint job based on the overspray on the trunk seal. Black one missing the trunk seal and has a messed up trim part. Can you go look at them in person? Check for rust and signs of being wrecked. I would imagine parts might not be that easy to get. They are sweet cars, my boss from 20 years ago had one... always wanted one after that. Red, 4 speed, black interior, bucket seats, good looking car. Boss wouldn't let me drive it, but wouldn't mind letting me drive his OT 04 cobra off the lot. The AMX was his baby.
