    Hello,

    All along, starting in 5th grade, I became a logical person. I had a terrible 3rd grade, developed some new skills in 4th grade and finally was able to say I was a great kid in school. It was because of the teacher and his way of talking to us to explain things, not in a “smarty pants” way, but a logical way that we could understand and put our own look at things. He allowed us to be us. Not a stand in line and do what you are told… mode.

    My social skills were blossoming and the friends list grew like roses blossoming in the spring. Except for that it was September and a new school year. But, within a month, the teacher had applied his skills to our needs and gradually shaped us to accept others and learn in the process. It was so gradual that we did not know it was happening, but the class started to be fun and very social. Other teachers kept the rows and talked to the back of our heads.

    He had circles for desks and we all looked at each other to say our facts or join in a discussion. We all thought it was advanced for an elementary school. No other class was doing this method and we did not care, since we all were heading in the right direction and learning what we could. He was like a ring master in a circus and kept us all busy without us knowing we were kept busy.

    In reading about the local “pro” surfers out there on the tour circuit, perhaps it was too soon to think about, but at the time, it sounded like a nice way to make a living doing something you like to do. Spending the dark hours of the early morning to the pre-lunch hour doing what you like, then wandering up and down the coastal cities representing several brand name companies seemed like a dream job for a teenager now looking for a path to the future. In 1961-62, I was looking ahead for a fun future for me.

    The hot rod/drag race days were slowly weaning itself away, although there were several hot irons in the fire, so to speak. But, college was just starting and one had to cancel several scholarship offers so I could stay close to the ocean for my own likes and needs. No, not selfish, but following my own path, what ever way it was supposed to go at the time.

    An Eastern university with a up and coming football program wanted me to be in their program. A scholarship was offered to me. It was located almost 120 miles from the ocean and any sort of waves. Plus, it was in an area that stays winter for most of the year and not a warm to hot daily weather regime liker i have been used to living/playing, along the So Cal coastline.

    My idea I had proposed to several surf shop owners and manufacturers network at the time was for me to represent their goods at their local beach ware shows and lineup of dealers all over the coastlines of the USA. Then hit all of the up and coming dealerships in the coastal European cities to push their wares on the growing market. The surf scene was opening up to the world and the USA was ripe for expansion.
    upload_2025-4-4_3-34-36.png For my USA travels, my trusty Flathead powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was ready to go. I could even save money by camping out at various locations and then spending time in some coastal motel for a couple of overnights.

    I got that idea while sitting in the sun waiting for the afternoon “glass-off” waves to roll in our prime So Cal coastal surf spot. It was warm, comfy and no worries as yet on the horizon. So, I was actually looking forward to doing this as a permanent future job. I could always work in a hot rod shop, automotive shop, or a beach side hamburger joint. But, the surf industry was growing and it was open for business.

    The local dealers were ok with that form of advertising, but said I would have to pay for my own time and stays in various locations. What??? Not a full time salary? So, I had to think on that point… Then I decided to ask my mom for some help in the funding situation. That was a big wall of smiles and laughter. Even my brother was laughing while I was explaining the future job.

    He was still recovering from his accident and liked the idea of expanding our speed shop business. Although, I could see it as a means to keep him involved, he was grasping at something to have me help him stay involved with hot rods and drag racing.


    Note:

    My path to being a sponsored surfer/salesman so early in the industry was met with laughter and continues to be a moment in time that got me to where I am today, meeting my girlfriend/future wife in college, thinking about our future together, and plodding along in our journey where I needed to be, to this day... YRMV

    Sometimes, it is definitely difficult to listen to people and try to understand their point of view. Some are vague and cover up the real reason for the rant. Other folks just pitch in without any reason behind what they said. The 60s were a great time to grow up and see all of this rhetoric being blasted from almost every street corner. It was like a guy in the middle of a park standing on a box blasting away at society, the folks He/she thought were evil and so on… rambling on for nothing.

    So, with being nice listeners, we did until it got to a useless point and then walking away was the right thing to do. Sometimes others interrupted the ramble and now, a conflict was happening. My wife and I chose to just walk away as nothing was going to change the speaker’s tone and false information.

    As far as society is concerned, the USA has free speech, but it is up to the individual to accept or deny the information, based on your understanding. So, it is easier to simply ignore the rant and move on.

    When the information of a loud speaker, urging others to follow the speaker’s intent is given. Then we have to make a choice as to being an individual to do our own thing or join like mice.

    Hot rod building is similar in that one tries to be different, but eventually falls into the trap of “accepting the modern fad” to fit the needs of a hot rod. Even if it is not the traditional way of a Flathead motor, steel wheels and blackwall tires as the main look, there are those that look at that build and comment on how it can be more traditional or make some changes.

    Others are not into that particular traditional way of building a hot rod and select an SBC motor and specific headers to fall into the hot rod culture. Even the large wheel concept is disheartening as most of those customs look like wagon wheels from Knott’s Berry Farm rides.

    That is their way to be a part of the whole concept of hot rod builds. Others may reject the build as they do not like SBC motors or it is not a “Hemi.” Differences make up the whole world as we can see in our society’s different groups. We have all come to the point of being individuals as our own way to see and live. So, that is why we all live where we do and our lives are all independent of other places and people…YRMV

    It has been a long time since I first saw my wife in college. It was one of those things that was a challenge from the start. Some of my friends and I were standing outside of a class waiting for everyone to arrive. The standard thing in college classes to see who is who and where they will sit in the classroom. But, we were all outside being college kids. So, a little bantering was going on in our group. We were having a great time.

    Then all of a sudden, down the long empty hallway towards the parking lot, the door slams and a girl was walking by herself towards us. The first thing was that we all noticed her at once. Long hair was the catch. Flowing down past her shoulders. A fluffy white short coat, calf high leather boots and the shortest dress known to mankind added to the image we all saw.

    Plus, sunglasses inside of the darkened corridor added to the mystique. Later, the girl told me that she did not wear her contact lenses, so she could not see clearly more than 20 feet in front of her. She did not see all of us staring intently… until she was almost upon where we were standing.


    Our group’s conversation stopped immediately and all eyes went down the hall. It was one of those moments that captured everyone’s eye and attention. No one spoke, but the force of all of our heads turning at once and continuing to view the image coming towards us was mesmerizing. We did not know, or at least I did not know I was staring.

    Normally, a glance is about it when viewing any girl walking around in college. Out of reach, then becoming out of sight was the norm. But, this image stuck in our (my) minds for quite some time.

    Now, at the time, there were nice looking girls that came into the classroom and sat anywhere. As any girl come walking into the class, all eyes move instantly. It is like a slow motion tennis match to see the heads move from right to left or to the open seating location. Then after class, it was the same movement from left to right as everyone exited. The standard motion for college classes.

    So, when the girl with the long hair, came into the class or exited the class, all eyes were on her. Even the girl I knew that was sitting next to me watched as “the girl” moved across the room to her seat. It was something that was a great story to tell later on to a listening audience.

    So, after the class was over and we all left for the semester, “the sight” was one of the most intense thing happening. I had no idea who she was and even though one of my friends was sitting next to her in the back row, he had no idea who she was. Quiet, taking notes, drawing art designs on her note pages added to the daily images.

    I wore these sailing flag, cotton lightweight baseball style jackets in rotation. She could see those colorful jacket patterns on the front as I was approaching. She could not see clearly as she did not have her contact lenses on or prescription glasses. It was cool to wear big dark sunglasses, instead. But, she recognized the mass of color coming her way on the campus sidewalks. That was me! (Especially the letter "W"... it was a target she could actually see down the long hallway or outdoors on the campus sidewalks...)

    She was not the Queen, she ruled that hallway and class. I secretly called her the King and at the time, I thought I would never see her again. Ha, a king of all visions… that was some way to start the last two years of college… YRMV

    Note:

    Of all things, “the King” and I became close friends from a chance encounter and from that new semester onwards, we were together. To this day, road trips during our 20s in the Red El Camino and long vacations together later sealed the deal. Sailing in a small cockpit for 18 years in windy conditions and so, it was going to be a together moment, but ended up past 50 years together.

    Traveling everywhere in So Cal and up/down the coastal areas sealed our relationships until we got married. Yes, we got married after deciding it was right. Despite the terrible time of 1968 for the whole world, we decided that together, we could adapt and live through all of the things going on through any situation.

    Today, we still see the world around us together and “The King” still rules the roost.

    Hello,

    All though out our lifetimes, as kids, we were taught to be nice to girls and women. It has struck a chord through the times of noticing girls in our classes and in our own communities. As the schools increased from one elementary school to a junior high school that drew from three other elementary schools, the ratio of new girls increased. Then the most surprising thing was 4 junior high schools fed into the large central high school to boost the amount of new students by 4 times more. Wow!

    High school was a learning curve. The classes were more competitive and everyone wanted to step up their social life. Sports helped play a big part of the whole scene. The girls in their blue cotton P.E. outfits were a matching look to the boys in their blue shorts and white t-shirt.

    But on the school “quad” was the waiting game going on from the time the school moved to this location. In the classes, the girls usually got the best grades and with a few exceptions, the guys always played catch up. “can I see your notes from the history class?” was always a good way to start things.

    Since the girls competitive sports teams were not as powerful as they are today, it was just the big time boys sports teams that drew everyone to the school assemblies and Friday night sporting events. Our school had the home games in the huge Veteran’s Stadium near the L.B. Airport for football. But, then again, we had two high school age tennis champions, boys and girls.

    It was one thing to ask for help in a class, but it was a good way to get to know the girls who always took notes and got the best grades. They were serious about high school. For us, it was sports, hot rods and cruising which led to the beach and eventually surfing. It helped that our local surf spot was next to Seal Beach and we did not have far to drive.

    When one looks at the old school year books, it always shows the groups and activities. In the classes, for me, it was always a great way to have a friend sitting next to me and usually, it was a girl or two. The guys that were the tops in Physics and Algebra classes were in a class by themselves. The girls were nicer when asked questions to explain things. But, were always willing to spend time helping. No one ever asked those guys that got the top grades. Ha! They were few and far between in our circles.

    Luckily, my grades went up and down in college. The more time I spent at the beach, surfing or traveling, the lower my grades became. So, in order to get my act together, I actually started studying with a neighbor, who was a girl. She got great grades and together we sat on the roof patio away from others, actually studying. She had a boyfriend, but lived in the next apartment, so we became good friends, anyway.

    Finally, my grades became high enough to transfer back to Long Beach and finish out the last two years of college… with my new acquaintance, my girlfriend and future wife. She had great grades, studied for all of her classes, did not have problems with notes and lectures and together, we were able to graduate. The future for both of us in hot rods, motorcycles, photography, and surfing road trips, has lasted to this day, to being the old folks on the neighborhood block. And a wonderful granddaughter now in her own college curriculum and adventures... YRMV
