What is the smallest battery that would have enough amps for a V-8? I am really short on space. I am thinking a gel battery or something that could be on it’s side even.
I used a lithium battery in my truck. Weighs like 8lbs, 4ish inches thick, can be mounted at any angle, starts my 241 hemi like a dream, 10.5:1
Yes small battery will start V8s Then you have cranking time / drainage & reserve, One place to look @ & understand Battery size's & other , Ultima battery website & others
I've had two Dyna-batts, I really liked them but you must make sure they stayed charged up and not mounted in a hot area. I had to go back to a lead acid battery because of those two things.
An Odyssey PC680 is fairly small and can be mounted anyway except upside down. I think they are normally used for jet-skis and snow-mobiles. I use one in my 32-5 window and it cranks my 318 Poly Dodge OK. Have a friend who mounted one up behind the dash in his early A - bucket. I think there are quite a few on here that use them and there is a Chinese equivalent called FullRiver which is about 2/3 the price.
I have a Dyna Batt that starts my 10.9:1 SBC no problem. It’s less than six months old though, so I can’t comment on durability and longevity.
While some of these smaller newer-tech batteries are cool, I like to take road trips and like to use batteries I can easily get on the road if needed.
Group 26 seems to be about the smallest really easy to find (cheap) battery, so that's what I use if room/weight is an issue. But that probably won't fit, if you're asking about putting the battery on it's side! Take a look at this one, AGM... 9.38 x 5.00 x 8.94 inches and in stock at walmart https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStar...roup-Size-S46B24R-12-Volt-410-CCA/1247321234?
I have an Odyssey PC 1100 laying flat under the seat in my deuce pickup. 12V 500CA 45AH 87 RC M6 Stud VRLA Battery. Didn't like siting on the gas tank so cut the top out of the under seat tank for the battery and some small tools. Also incorporated a kill switch in the front of the tank. Put a stock style 32 tank under the back of the bed.
Agreed. For a lead acid battery with smallish dimensions I use one from an '80s era Mustang GT with a 302 V8. Mine is mounted under the dash in my tub.
Kind of a silly response; do you really think someone asking a very generic question would be talking about a 600 cubic inch engine with 13.5-1 compression? It’s so obvious in that case that any type of small battery would be completely out of the question. But thanks for your insight and have a good day.
I used a small lawn tractor battery mounted in a toolbox/armrest in my Flathead-powered T-Bucket. Worked well.
not a silly question at all. When people ask for a part recommendation without telling us all about what the application is, we can waste a lot of time giving out wrong answers because they failed to mention really important stuff.
Braille B 3121. AGM battery measuring 6.6 in. L x 5.2 in. W x 6.8 in. H. Available from Speedway, Jeggs, Summit, etc.
I use Odessey PC925 in 4 cars at the moment including my 11:1 olds, 10:1 Desoto hemi, Blown flathead and to a lesser extent, my dune buggy. They are small, lightweight, seem to last (oldest one is 11+ years old), can be mounted in any configuration and do not require venting. They are one of the only batteries certified for hospital use for that reason. Good enough for me and mine. They are sold at all Battery Plus locations, Summit Racing, one day delivery on Amazon, Jegs, Walmart, etc.
The PC 1100 is WAY WAY better than the pc680. I had a pc680 originally and it worked but if it doesn't start in the first couple cranks its struggled. i got the PC 1100 and cranks way longer and better. and its is marginally bigger
> >What is the smallest battery that would have enough amps for a V-8? I am really short on space.> > If it was mine, I'd pick the smallest battery on the EverStart Value battery rack at Walmart. Then I'd take it home. Then I'd make it fit.
I've been running the Odyssey PC 680 in my Roadster with built v8 flathead for 14 years. I finally replaced it after 10 years, just because. Then used it in my tractor for a couple of years. Also running one in my 32 Coupe with built 53 Merc engine. Never an issue.
In addition, I also use the Mustang battery in my champ car, in a drop-down cradle that also contains a battery kill switch, as found on many drag cars.
The newer Odessy’s are not as good as they were 10-12 years ago…I don’t know why but newer ones even kept charged have not lasted more than 2-3 years under the same circumstances.
The Odyssey batteries are my go to as well. Small and a ton of cranking amps. The one in my Roadster is going on 10 years now. Never had a Lead acid last that long. I have screwed up a few times and left the key on killing the battery and was able to bring them back to life
I have a .30 cal ammo box and thought it would be cool to find a battery to fit in it so I could use it as a battery box. I found a lithium one from Optima with good enough CCAs to work, but then I couldn't find anyone who knew if you can charge a lithium battery with a generator. With an alternator they require a special regulator, as a lithium battery can take whatever charge you throw at it and becomes a bomb that can catch fire. I might look at gel type battery and a .50 cal ammo box, or just use a traditional lead acid. To be HAMB friendly, shouldn't it be an old tar top?
Some of those jumper pack batteries are not much bigger than a couple packs of cigarettes. I do not know if an alternator would recharge them. Like @squirrel and someone else above said. I would do whatever I had to do to put in a battery that you can go to a chain store to replace. I would not want to be stuck some place needing a battery to find out my battery has become obsolete.
Odyssey for me in my 40, in the stock location. BIG improvement! I sliced and diced the stock tray and reused the OE stands. Tucked it further outboard in the stock inner fender panel recess. Sits in an aluminum tray that I had laying around and fits it, amazingly! Gave lots of needed room for the SBC rams horns and heater fittings and hoses. Cover/hold down is aluminum. Cheap on EBay. Yeah, the bright red is too much.
Not really!! You started a thread that is a total "Guessing Game" as to the cranking amps required. As of this reply you still haven't even given any of us a clue [and most of us don't have mindreading abilities] While everybody is "shotgunning" this thread with random examples , the smallest 12v battery I've jump started a car with ,was a Panasonic 12V Micro Alkaline Battery The car was a hybrid that needed 12v to trigger the master relay so anything is possible [and information is relevant]
