I’m trying (going) to get my 53 F600 running to haul bales on my farm this summer.

It runs and I have a video to prove it. Next is hooking up the fuel line and then replacing the master cylinder and hoping that the rest of the brake system is operational.

I want to change the oil too. What filter element lurks in this housing?

take it out and look at the number stamped on it? :)

but it does look like the original Ford filter, which would take a Wix 51006

    do some measuring

Thank you. Next question… I’m planning to just run Rotella 15w40 in it. Any issues?

  5. On a new build or engine freshen up I’d run the t4 or newer detergent stuff

on an old engine that hasn’t run a long time I’d consider a straight non detergent type

would you also think about pulling the oil pan and removing all the sludge?

To get serious for a moment, I think your recommendation of non-detergent oil is totally wrong. The O/P is asking about a truck made in 1953. Seeing as how detergent oil was widely used by then, I'd be willing to bet that the truck has never seen non-detergent oil and introducing it now would be a serious mistake. Only the owner knows for sure what oil he has been running in it and can make the proper decision.

And I think you know what I think about using diesel oil for a purpose for which it was never intended.

  8. The old crap around here ran straight 30 nd most of the time
Had old guys running it in the 80s growing up.
My old 67 ran it. Old owner wrote on the inside of the hood.
Dang near completely stopped up when I got it

Do not confuse "straight weight" with "non-detergent". I'll bet the straight 30 them "old guys runnning it" was detergent.

Projecting your experiences on someone you do not know is faulty logic.

Jeebus - I opened a can of worms. Sorry.

The engine was rebuilt at a ford reman shop in 1974. Beyond that, I know nothing about the history of the truck. I’m going to run rotella in it, I run this in gas engines all the time including endurance race engines - the car in my avatar had rotella in it in that photo.

Thanks for your help, filter ordered from Jebediah Bezos. I hope to get a chance to change it this week.
