Technical Found some wheels , need tire suggestions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by VANDENPLAS, Apr 27, 2025.

  1. IMG_0674.jpeg IMG_0631.png IMG_9362.jpeg Found a nice set of 15” x 8” wheels
Have a nice look to them , look like old torque thrusts .

anyways need to find some tires

I’m thinking 255/60R15 on the rear
    And 225/65R15 on the front

Found brand new cooper cobra radial gt’s for a pretty good price , I’ve always liked the look of coopers side walls as they bulge a bit

I’m not looking for a rubber rake , but same diameter front and back with a fatter tire on the rear .

Plan is to lower the car 2”-3” I’ve found rear leaf spring with a 2” drop and looking at the speedway or summit disc brake kit with drop spindles and might hack a coil off the springs .

    thoughts ?

Wheels look good, but isn't 8 inch wide too wide?

    Is this a test?
    If it is, not traditional.
If it is not, not traditional.

  6. everything I’ve read says a 10” wheel won’t fit a Tri-five , but a 10” tire will

a 255 is 9.5-ish inches so should work out fine .

how is a 15” wheels , modeled in a traditional style , not traditional ……

    They just don’t look right.
Not trying to insult anyone but I’ve had a few beers and they look pretty “non-traditional “ so I said it.
    Maybe I’m the only one…

  9. you can fit 8" wheels in the rear wheel well. Our 55 Chevy has had 1969 8" Corvette Rally's on it since the mid 70s. You have to take the shock loose and drop the rear end to make it fit if you have a slightly larger tire.

I can’t help with tire size, but that’s going to be a great combination. Especially since being in Canada nice wheels like that don’t grow on trees.

I think it looks great with the dog dish caps, and heck, when you are driving you can't see the wheels anyway!

  15. I like the black steelies also , going to keep them and see if I can find a wider set for the rear so I can swap looks .

was looking for a set of wide steelies and they where roughly the same price as was I got now , I like shiny :D

  16. Using the tire calculator I’m thinking

    235/60/15 on the front

    with either 245/60/15 rear

    the equals the same diameter

or 255/60/15 it’s just a shade bigger diameter

255 is right on the “ limit” of what will fit on a 7” wheel .or so they say

  17. Put the five spokes on front, wide steelies on the back, best of both worlds and you can post on the mismatched thread, which I believe would make it a trifecta, which if you won one, you could pay for all these tires and rims. Enough cliches for one morning.

  20. I have a 383 T5 going in it with a power steering pump

I’ve seen v8 trifives with the power steering box and it’s awfully close to the manifold

For your question …I highly recommend round tires. Balanced as a plus so anthonymyrick could drive it!

before you buy 60 series wide tires and mount them making the wheels un returnable you had better remove a rear wheel and measure for room so you don't have rubbing problems. And yeah even though those are 15 inch 5 spokes, those ridler wheels are way too modern for my tastes. If it were me I would do something like this 56gold.jpeg 56gold2.jpeg

Lost me with the four doors.
Keep it stock and use it for taking grandbabies for ice cream.

  26. @Moriarity that ride is faaaaaaannncy !!!

thought about a set of tru-spokes , would not do Wide White on this car .

thinking , shaved hood bird with a pretty cool part someone sold me
The wheels I bought , with bullet caps , so no riddler cap
    Black wall tires .
remove the over riders on the front bumper
I found a wagon rear bumper center section , I now need to find the outer ends ( my car has one piece bumpers ) I like the plate in the bumper look
And was thinking a set of mini side/lakepipes

very similar to what you have on your vette .

Like this with functioning cut outs ( would like to find a set of cable controlled cut outs .
thinking the look I’m going for is a mild custom with a tiny bit of hot rod flair .

Nice '56. Any 60 series tire on an 8" wide rim, on the front, is gonna give that steam-roller vibe IMO. The box's do say 15x7 as someone mentioned. Personally I'd with least a 70 series on front.

Round tires that balance out are good! They don't seem to be as plentiful as they used to be. A lot of modern tires are not round, nor do they balance out.

The 1st number on the tire is the tread width, it doesn't change within a tire brand for the specified tread width.
The number is aspect ratio number, a percentage of how tall the tire sidewall is compared to its width. A 60 series tire is 60% of the tires width, a 78 series tire is 78% of the tires width.
The taller side wall may make the tire appear to be not as wide, but the tire width isn't what changes. A 235 x 75 x 15 tire has the same tread width as a 235 x 60 x 15, the sidewall height changed.
The width of the tire is often what the conflict is with a tire rub. A wide tread width coupled with the wrong offset of the wheel can be a huge problem. The wheel off set needs to center the tire in the wheel well, and the tread width needs to fit between the inner and outer fender. With a given suspension height, a shorter tire sidewall may position the tire tread at a lower point where the wheel well has a wider opening.

Overrated. Cokers will keep your car form rolling away if you forget to set the brake.

That first number is the section width (widest part of the tire, not tread width), in millimeters, of a properly inflated tire on a specified rim width. Personally, I think a tire where the tread width and the rim width are the same looks best.
You are right, that within a brand, a section width shouldn't change with changes in aspect ratio. Change brands and you are on your own.
