Can someone tell me which valve cover bolts go into water or oil. Edit: Hot Heads answered - 1, 2, & 3 go into water. I believe only 1 and 3 go into water. I'm almost certain that 4, 5, & 6 are blind. I think 2 is also blind. Appreciate it. (I understand the exhaust 4 lower go into water and 3 upper into oil) 392 by All American 6 posted Apr 30, 2025 at 6:48 PM
I don't know but on my Desoto Hemi, I learned to treat them all as wet bolts. As well as the exhaust bolts. Leaky sum*****
I quickly changed from bolts to studs after having water leaks during break-in. During break-in valve covers need to be off if any valve lash adjustments are needed. Studs can seal out the water leaks
I'd have never guessed that the early Hemis had valve cover bolts that went into water or oil p***ages. Sure sounds like a good excuse to convert to studs and nuts.
Studs with lock***e thread sealer is your friend . I never had one clue , Hemi rocker cover bolts hit water.
The engine had studs with the chrome steel covers that were installed when I bought the car. The M/T's won't fit over the studs - the valve cover hits the firewall when lifting over the stud. I will have to use bolts. I bought the right bolts from Hot Heads: 5/16-18x2.5 I did get the stud kit for the exhaust. I took that first exhaust bolt out and water started running out. I thought I had a cracked head. I ran to the Hamb for some quick research. 32 5 Window by All American 6 posted Feb 16, 2025 at 7:41 PM
Ahh, the morning Chuckle. Life is a continuing education course, and we will always need to modify those lessons to make things work in the Hot Rod hobby. And when I took my first Hemi apart I thought the factory was just making things difficult.
