Just picked up this B trans for my roadster, hope to use it behind the B banger, will this trans bolt to the A flywheel housing or will I need to use the B housing and fab engine mounts? I understand I'll need to make pedal, wishbone and handbrake mounts. It's also missing the shifter, will any stick from 32-36 work?

Here now, after returning from over there. Good times.

And if you use a B pan, you will need to make up a filler piece or splice in a chunk of A pan to seal around the rear main cap, as the B cap seal surface is larger than the A rear cap sealing surface. Not hard to do, just be aware.

One old fella told me it’s easier to remove the back half of a B pan and weld that on the original A pan. Said it should fit on. Then you don’t need to worry about the sealing surfaces. I haven’t tried it yet.

I'm reposting this because it was buried in the Quote when I posted it yesterday. As far as adding the B rear flange to an A pan I have looked at it both ways and the shape of the A pan is quite different in the rear. I think fabricating the filler piece is an easier direction.

You will need to use the B flywheel housing and a B oil pan in order to use the B transmission with an A block. The flywheel housing is a bolt on, but the pan and the block need a couple of modifications. First, you need to resolve the difference in how the pan seals against the rear main bearing cap. The B crank journals and cap are larger than the A so when you test fit the B pan to the A block you will find a significant gap that needs to be filled on the B pan. The filler piece needs to be made so that it will seal against the cork strip on the rear main cap when the pan is bolted on.

Second, you need to fill the two pan bolt holes in the rear bulkhead of the A block. If these aren't filled you will get lots of oil moving from the sump into the flywheel housing and you and your clutch don't want that. While you're at it, the B pan has two mounting holes in the rear corners that you won't find in your A block, so you need to drill and tap holes to match the B pan in order to seal it along the rear of the block. This photo shows the block with the new hole tapped in the rear corner, and with the bolt hole for the A pan filled. The gray spot is JB Weld placed over a cut off bolt that's installed by sawing a slot in it to allow you to screw it into place just below the machined surface of the block, File the JB Weld flush with the surrounding gasket surface. When you install the pan with a B pan gasket you will find it's a little short where it is supposed to fit up against the main cap. If you use the paper style (not cork) gasket you can easily compensate for that with your favorite silicon gasket sealing or making product.

Now all you have to do is build motor and frame mounts, brackets to hold the pedals, a new clutch release shaft and an emergency brake bracket. These parts are all available but can be fabricated in a home shop too. You are right about the shifter, any 32-36 with the short bottom.

  22. Anybody have hands-on experience rebuilding one of these water pumps?
A friend in Nashville has one on a recently purchased coupe, but hasn’t seen one before.
Experienced banger guy with a complete shop, but was looking for tips before tearing it down.
Is it a sealed bearing held in with a snap ring or press fit?
    Thanks!

I think that is a Norm Frick water pump. I've used one, but never had one apart. I think it is based on a 32- 36 21 stud V-8 water pump

Would that be the 9N/2N tractor engine and its stablemate used in '41 pickups?

Judging by the photos the size of the bellhousing makes me think it is a Truck engine. They must mention "Vehicle" in the text.

HAL made a variety of engines and parts, hadn't heard of Rods unless they were repurposed from one of their engine's?
