Featured Hot Rods parts sale

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by bangngears, May 1, 2025.

  1. I sell here on the HAMB. My sales always include free shipping in the USA. Yes, the cost of shipping is added into my price, but people know up front what their cost will be. We, that sell, have no control over the cost of shipping. What irks me is when a prospective buyer wants more info about the part, more pictures, and then does not have the courtesy to get back to me.

I’ve got it all backwards- I generally only use emojis to try and offend my friends. Some day I will be fit for polite company…

As per the original topic, it’s endemic everywhere. I know someone trying to sell some old stamping presses. Practically trying to give them away- 2 different buyers have negotiated a deal, and then abruptly disappeared. Guy is baffled because both times he accepted lowball offers… just wants them out of the shop.

I find it hard to believe that people go to the post office to get a shipping quote.

  4. If you read one of my prior posts I was charged $10+ over the cost of shipping and received no packing at all. Oh, by the way, when I was selling online I never charged $0.01 over actual shipping costs, not for packing, not for driving to the post office, nothing more than my actual shipping costs, and I included a copy of the shipping receipt to the customer.

REALLY?????????????? I'm supposed to cover the TOTAL cost of shipping , or add $75.00 on every thing I sell just to be sure I don't get burnt?

  8. I switched to PirateShip also for the few items I’ve shipped.
Fill in the blanks on the app, weigh it and it gives you the shipping price.
Pay with PayPal, print the label and drop it off at the nearest UPS pickup site (local drugstore).
Easy, peasy, and a lot less than UPS. I’ve checked when I dropped off the box.

It's all not that hard. You should know what you want for the part, and a fairly accurate idea on shipping is not hard to get. The secret is to not prepare, package, or send the item until the deal is made and payment has been received!!!

Thought I should share today's shipping story but from the buying end. About a month ago, anothercarguy did a write up about building a nice air cleaner assembly for his tri-power SBC. He even told me the filter element to buy. Turns out this oval air cleaner originally came on a '81 to '86 Ford Escort and the local parts houses could only locate one out of Winnipeg and me being cheap didn't like the shipping charge. Found one at Rockauto on a clearance sale for $3. Great deal but shipping was over $50. Didn't want to drive across the border to Montana due to the current political situation. Anyhow, checked the cost for shipping to the border; $19.34. Determined I really didn't have any grudges against the people at the border store since they need all the help they can get with the tariff issue anyhow and splurged on buying two filters.

after you securely box the item pick your favorite carrier and go to their website. enter dimensions, weight and which service (fast or slow) you want to use. (I like the post office) sign up for an account and you can print your label and pay for your postage at home. click the button for next day pickup, or bring it to the post office and and put it in the drop box or if it does not fit give it to a clerk inside without waiting in line. UPS you can bring it to the local UPS store or schedule a pickup.

if you sell things on ebay you even get a discount on postage when you use the post office.

it is a much simpler process than you would think.

As much as I NO LONGER like fleabay ( as a seller been ripped off too many times ) a seller can make what is called a private listing and then send that listing to the person whom wants the part. At least it does cover a lock in on the agreements. Yea I have played the dimensions game in shipping box's. UPS is famous for the measurements game.

Courtesy is the issue. Both sides can call it a LID if there is excessive shipping. That happens. Just be courteous in the deal.

I may work for you, but not worth the risk or cost to me. Have a good day.

I like to sell locally because of shipping rates.
People get mad because I won't ship my stuff. But, that's okay with me.

That's strange, when I filled in the Rockauto cart with three of those filters the shipping to me in Canada is between $21 and $29 CAD depending how fast I want them.
I've found Rockauto excellent to ship to Canada.

Sometimes our beloved hot rod hangout becomes a mass therapy session or a convention of nerds dissecting the molecular makeup of the skidmarks we left with our old tires to determine if they're Firestone or Goodyear. Show us where the packing tape cutter gave you a boo boo...

This shows the problem involved in selling and shipping stuff for us private individuals. I live about an hour's drive to the Montana border, not a large metropolitan region while Beanscoot is on Vancouver Island in B.C.'s capital city. Of course, shipping would be less for him. Rockauto has a bit of an advantage here.

I shipped a Columbia rear end down there, but the buyer knew how to do it on the cheap! There is a guy in Indianapolis that ships one of those huge containers down there, he just keeps getting stuff until it’s full , then send it! Don’t know how much it cost, all I had to do was get it to Indianapolis!

Amen. Absolutely was assaulted by those fuggers. Sent some very light items that were 35" long in a 48" box. UPS sez after the fact that the box was 49" (nope.) Marks up a $17 shipment by $50 to $67. Awww HELL no. Appealed through FleaBay by calling their support number (yes, they have one it is 1-800-322-9266) and they let me open a case and they emailed me in about a week. Won the case. I'm using eBay less and Marketplace more to avoid shipping pains.

I noticed that too, but he has the light half, so maybe things worked out OK.

An old saying from the 70s (Never trust anyone under 3o) has reversed. I don't take the word of anyone under 50 until they prove the "worth of their word " A HAMB member took over a year
to pay for items I sold him, and sent him, which the price, and shipping costs were stated in advance. Assuring me he would send a USPS money order, months went by with nothing.
Only because I got PayPal and advised him of
a possible negative vendor review, did he finally pay up. Maybe the post office was too great a distance away,(not)... oh wait it wasn't as "super-duper "easy as a few key strokes.

The phrase was " Never trust anyone OVER 30".
