13 second car was fast back in the days. If I want to go racing I build a race car and it only runs on the race track.

Yep, but an Aussie winter - racing all year round.

When we went metric in ‘74 we got the Celsius temperature scale. It starts at 0C (32F), so we don’t get snow anymore.

(we also had to colour the whole country when black-and-white television ended in ‘75… koalas were easy as they are grey anyway but it was hard to round up all the kangaroos).

    cheers,
    Harv

Those Kangaroos were too hard for the Australians to catch so they put a bounty on them, and, faster than a diarrhea attack, 500,000 Kiwis had shifted to Oz. 380,000 got a flat at Bondi Beach and went on the dole, 100,000 shifted in with their relatives in Logan (Queensland) and also went on the dole, and the other 20,000 rounded up the Roos and gave them a repaint.

It is also worth mentioning that the 500 or so that remained in NZ have done a tremendous job of rebuilding the population to a level where many can be on the dole in their own country.:p:rolleyes:

Yes a 13.01 car was faster than about any factory muscle car if it had stockish tires on it .
when you figure a 1970 Chevelle SS with the best 454 they offered was only doing a 13.6 or worse and it was around the fastest made then if you had a mid 13 second street car in the late 70's early 80's you had a fast car . Most gen 1 Cameros were in the 14's unless you had a BBC and much better than stock tires . most HS kids in 1980 that had a Chevelle , Camero , Mustang and so on that was a true street drive it every day car were in the 14's unless they had some low gears and good tires and then suspension to hook up .

My Chevelle was barely streetable with 5:13 gears , a Ford top loader with a Vertigate linkage , and a 12-1 SBC with 660 carbs but I did drive it a lot . I had the rear quarters gut and ran a 12' wide Mc Currey sprint car tire a lot that was 30" tall . On the Micky Thompson N50's it was almost useless off the line . I had over 400 HP and that was a lot in those days and I shifted at about 8000 RPM and it was a 13.02 car 99% of the time at the track on DOT tires . That said i could beat a lot of the actual street car around including rich kids wiht SS Chevells , Cameros , a Hurts Shelby mustang , an 426 Hemi Cuda that ran low 12 on the track but sucked on the street . It took al I had to go into the 12's and it runnied the car doing it as I butchered it up and it was a true 67 SS body ;( .

My cousin had a 302 chevy powered 65 Chevelle with 5;13 gears and a turbo 400 that would run 12.80 and it was one of the fastest cars in town at the time . It was 13:1 and had a big roller cam and better heads than I even had . Back then nobody realy had aluminum heads except sprint car guys and honestly those old Brownfield heads were not that much better but it all adds up .
sure there were some faster cars as the pro street stuff started happening and there were some stuff that was faster that werte more race car than street car but as kid in 1980 a 13 second flat car was pretty damn fast and 12.zz was the goal most of us had .
I beat the Alston built Camero that was one of the first Pro street cars around in about 1982 with its BBC at Sears Point with a 12.99 pass and I was a hero for a few days .
back then that red Camero was about the nicest car I had ever seen . Mike Mays so of SR of CP performance in Cotati CA had it before the guy I beat had it and it was the shit in 1981 .

Today factory cars run much much faster but in the late 70's early 80's 13 flat was fast and
