Well that makes sense, cuz I did just a tiny bit of research and...

The Woodill Wildfire was an American sports car built by Dodge and Willys dealer Blanchard Robert "Woody" Woodill from 1952 to 1958 in Downey, California.

 

That awesome! I came real close (wife said no) to doing a Bandit style job on the 41 PU I built. Love the black and gold look.

When we were driving in another coastal city, we were checking out our old stomping grounds that we once frequented. It was in an area close to the beach and a mile inland where there were some old industrial buildings placed. Sure, the surfboard shops are directly near or on the street paralleling the beach and waves, but little to none actual surfboard shaping or glossing goes on in those shops,

Back in the early 60s, the shops had back rooms, where the local hot shaper was busy creating his own shapes and then glossing them in the backyard area or another enclosed room. So much for old history as the building inspectors eventually put a stop to the practice and made all of the surfboard shops move their actual “surfboard making” facilities in an industrial area specific to the local laws.

Some shops were so small, so they farm the shaping in one place of the city and in another portion or facility located in a 100% industrial shop buildings area, the smelly glossing and final prep took place. One major facility was a couple of blocks of our last Long Beach house. My friend worked in the big glossing facility and out back were the sanding areas and the next room was the final prep and finish gloss area. From here, the finished surfboards were shipped to the showrooms along the beaches of So Cal.

This hot rod facility was near several industrial shops of all sorts of activity. I could smell the fibergl*** aroma in the air just a block or two streets over. It might have been a small fibergl*** boat repair business or boat construction company.

I was surprised that this cool 1939 Ford Coupe was sitting in the back area and it looked like a daily driver. The rest of the parking lot were trash cans and various broken down machines ready for the large dump trucks. but, more than likely, it was an owner or mechanic of one of the shops close by. YRMV

Just back from a walk with the pup. Spotted these 2 Plymouths only a block apart. Very nice 40 coupe and really like the hubcaps on the sedan!

 

A friend’s project. My only help was the door lettering. It’s come a long way.

Hello,

One of the most popular pick up trucks is a 56 Ford Pickup. I saw my first Ford pickup truck in 1954 and it was one of those one time hot rod/custom cars that should have been in a magazine. It was a full custom as the Tahitian Red Color stood out and the white tuck and roll upholstery also made the paint color noticeable from several blocks away. It was always parked in front of the owners shop and we walked by it almost daily in the Westside of Long Beach. The chrome reversed wheels and lowered rake stance made it look as mean as the color was beautiful.

We have seen plenty of those models in all sorts of colors. The most popular being red. But this dark blue version with color matching rims and beauty trim rings/small center hubcaps just stood out a**** the more modern vehicles parked.

The So Cal truck acceptance as custom hot rods works well since a lot of them are used to haul things between sitting in a parking lot or parked on the street.

This one looked straight, the color stood out in the 11 am sunny day and was telling the world or at least the shop workers, that it is ready for the next load to deliver to some other workplace. (the window was rolled down and the path to the street was clear.) YRMV

Moseying around Harbor Freight this morning. Saw a very big man and his very tiny daughter doing the same. Just the visual alone was awesome. But I had the additional pleasure of overhearing what the little girl was saying to her father. She was so animated and interested in everything. "What's that for, daddy?" "Are we going to get some of those?" It was so sweet, I couldn't stand it. I had to talk with them. Nice guy named Brandon. And Ella. She started telling me everything. I'm 3 years old, holding up three fingers. I said to her, "You're so pretty, can I take a picture of you and your daddy? Daddy said it was okay to take a picture and share it with you guys.

Brandon and his future gearhead daughter, Ella. LOL

We usually see 4 door Ford Station Wagons if we see any old wagons. So, when a 1962 Mercury Station Wagon is parked in a lot, it automatically caught my eye. The dark green paint color was very nice and the rolled on wood sides did not have any scratches. So, care has been taken to preserve such a cool station wagon.

It had the cl***ic style with chrome rims and small center hubcaps. Skinny whitewalls worked its way into the look, so popular back during this time period. Not wide whites, but skinny whitewall tires.

Overall, it was a nice looking mild custom waiting its turn to go cruising or running parts for the business behind the tailgate. YRMV

1963 Mercury Monterey

There are some old cars rolling around in the coastal locations, as if it was 1963. In all of the cars parked in a popular grocery store parking lot, this 1963 Mercury Monterey hardtop sedan was the coolest in the lot, bar none. It had the one thing we all wanted in a sedan top. A perfect opening for a surfboard without racks or opening the trunk.

Yes, the interior seating would be as if it was a limousine with the friends in the back. Ha! But, one would not get the exhaust smoke rolling back into the car with the window open, like in some old station wagons.

A 62 year old car out for a cruise and some shopping on a sunny day. All of the “coolness” with the modern conveniences to ward off the “warmth of the sun…” AC vs cell phone helper. YRMV

On this day, if the 1963 Mercury drove down to the ocean, it would have melted into the water color along the shoreline. The sun was out for once and the ocean had the tropical color of blue that fit the comparison… YRMV
