Technical Chrysler 331 early hemi parts questions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by dutch deuce, May 4, 2025.

  1. I am having my 1954 Imperial 331 rebuild at the moment and have some questions.

Engine came out of a 1954 Imperial with a 4 barrel Carter carburator on it so i ***ume
it is a 235HP version (as all 1954 Imperials ?)
    Engine number is C542-8-10722

What are the sizes of the inlet valves ?
What are the sizes of the exhaust valves ?
Do these engines have hydraulic lifters as standard ?

Are there any other parts suppliers than Egge and Hot Heads and are they willing to ship to
    Europe (Netherlands)?

'54 Imperials had the short tail 4 bl engine. Had same 1.81" int. & 1.5" ex valves that all 51-4s had, but with oval ex ports. They take long reach spark plugs. Hyd lifters only, no solids untill the 300 engines in '55. Quality Engineered Components (73 RR here on the board), Rock Auto, Roberts Motor Parts, Bernbaum all have at least some parts. Gary at QEC is a great guy!

Melling 812 lifters work fine, (don't look exactly the same) as do most other suppliers, except one that uses that number for S. B. Chevy.

There were at least some 2V engines made in '54, all standard NYers were supposed to get them.

Gary at quality engineering component is great. Maybe Kanter has something for you.
I regret not raising the compression on my 331 it’s about 8-1 but I did have larger valves installed from hotheads racing on the 51 heads round port. It’s dynoed at about 290 hh intake and 465 lift cam. Gl on your build
