Hello, The most famous Pontiac Ambulance and a rare model at that was our favorite from 1958 to 60. The Dilday Mortuary 2 door Pontiac Ambulance, that was the mainstay at Lion’s Dragstrip from the beginning to nearly the late 60s. one of the only two door ambulance models... Mr. Childers, Dilday Ambulance Services, Long Beach, CA When we were both in high school, we knew the two brothers from the Dilday Family. They were well known in the whole area as the Mortuary was always busy. The two brothers played football and were involved in school activities for there time in school. The odd thing was, we all knew the future of the two brothers after college. Then when we were racing at Lion’s Dragstrip, we saw the 2 door Pontiac Ambulance sitting by the orange tower. It had direct access to the drag strip’s surface and the whole length of the area for racing. 1959 two brothers in a conversation with Mr. Childers near the tower and his ambulance. His friendly attitude allowed us to wander over for a good photo/filming location. Jnaki The closest action spot next to the orange tower. Once we met Mr. Childers and talked about the Pontiac Station Wagon converted to an ambulance, it was like old home week… He was very friendly and being an ambulance driver was “no walk in the park.” He was also impressed that we knew the Dilday Family and especially the two sons who were part of our high school activities. No, they did not race or modify hot rods or cruisers. They always drove in some of the nice new sedans available locally. The mortuary was a busy place and a few blocks from our high school. But, the Lion’s Dragstrip had the most unusual smaller Pontiac Ambulance. The normal mortuary hearse vehicles were a lot longer and larger. our old friend, Mr. Childers helped us when my brother had to be loaded onto the ambulance. He told me that he would wait with my brother in the ICU until I could get my parents and show up in the emergency section of the local hospital. Note: The "secret spot," was a primo photo location, but quite dangerous. (next to the white ambulance.)YRMV
