    Hello,

This is one of our favorite roads along the S.F. Coast. In 1949, our dad took us on our first coastal journey to San Francisco in his 1949 Buick Roadmaster. The destination was of course, S.F. City and all that it offers. The tiny building on the top of the curving road was the destination this time. He wanted to have dinner at the famous Cliff House Restaurant overlooking the ocean at the sharp curve in the photo. There have been many posts on the Cliff House as it is/was an icon in San Francisco.

Our dad was proud that he was able to take the whole family to his discovery of this classic place. It was not as crowded as the photo, so we were able to park in the beach front parking lot until we were ready for dinner later on. He did not bring his surf/rock fishing equipment as this was a family vacation. But, while on the beach and near the rocky outcroppings along the cliffside area, he had thoughts of "surf fishing" from those locations.

That was the start of our Cliff House Restaurant experiences. We came back up to San Francisco in our dad’s 57 Buick and yes, we stopped at the famous restaurant. It was one of those places that stays in your head, well after visiting and dining there. That 1957 Buick excursion was our last family tour of California, as we were heading into the teenage driving stage and no longer wanted to go on “family vacations” any more. But, one last time for the good old dad...

Then a few more years and during our last year of college, my wife and I took a long vacation up the coast (one of many during those last two years + photo trips) and again, stopped at the restaurant on the cliff. After several more road trips to San Francisco, it became a stop over every time we drove to the Bay Area in our married life vacations. It never got old in any road trip we took together. The last one was in 2019, but it did not look as nice as it did all of those other years of stopping for dinner.

By the time the 2020 the Covid Pandemic started, the restaurant closed for good. Now, it is a shell of its former glory and still stands on the cliff top point… YRMV

Suits and ties on the beach. You’re lucky to see people dressed like that for church these days.
