It wasn’t an Allison, could have sworn the sign said “Ranger” and the crew was quick to correct folks that called it an Allison. Inverted from an Allison and would explain the exhaust ports trumpeting from where they were.

  2. The Ranger was a 440 cu. in. six cylinder. The Allison V-12 (as used in the P-38) was a 1710 cu.in. monster! Also used in Unlimited Hydroplanes.

Well whatever it was, it had a dozen of everything and scared small children, women and the homeless people camping on the sidewalk. A most wonderful din!

It was great to see you Billy, thanks for the photos. I was fighting a cold and was just too tired to make Russ’s Memorial. See you at PIR !

Mitch Kim stripes. It had a neat little mirror on the back bumper so you could see the flying eyeball on the diff cover.

I got a special gift from a friend (Mike Bell) who made these models of My Roadster along with Ernie Martin's, back in 2000. I always wanted this display, but never asked, so he gives them to me 25 years later ! IMG_1571.jpg IMG_1569.jpg IMG_1567.jpg

Saw those on the floor board of the R/PU and was going to ask but you were busy holding court Sir Marty.

No, it's a Ranger V770 V12 that as mentioned is installed inverted in the Sibley rail. I talked with the owner, but didn't get his name. At some point the wheelbase was stretched a couple feet longer ahead of the engine, likely to improve handling at higher speeds.

I was maybe 8 ft away when he fired it up, and had my fingers in my ears, but I felt every cylinder firing against my chest when it hit. He had fuel supply issues, and it didn't run more than a few seconds each time he fired it up.

Obviously a skilled model builder. Thise look like the real deal Marty.
I had never heard of a Ranger, I knew it was aircraft and I only knew of the Allisons, my bad. It was an engine you could feel down deep!

Thank you so much TC for starting this thread, AND to you also BB for your Great job of photo coverage!!
My planned trip fell through so you both saved the event in different manner for me and many others who also wanted to honor and remember this remarkable hot rod builder supreme amongst hot rod builders.

And for you my friend Russ, I miss our phone talks, (and will always) about the suspension in my Ford, our laughs over Ben Sebastion, and, I know full well if there is any need for mechanical transportation where you are now , you have already figured out a way to make it faster, cooler, much more alluring and looking for the next project. On this thread, there are 3 (or more) fenderless coupes with headlights and racing signs on them. They all refer to Gas Coupe competition, but to me look like Altered. Is there an organization up north that calls them Gas Coupes?
