Ok fellas I picked this carb up local to me, but honestly I’m under educated. It appears to be old chrome the only marking on the carb is 81.the base plate says EE-7/8 also marked P21622 and also a 6. I would have thought it would have been marked Stromberg like others I’ve seen. I’m trying to set up and 81 for a Winfield down draft intake I have. Hoping to mate this to a B motor.
81's were especially popular for running dual carbs on a banger. dual 97s...a bit much. In your case one 97 will work, but one 81 will work too.
The Stromberg info cast into the side of the bowl on the opposite side of the "81" looks like it was sanded off before chroming.
Your carb has a replacement throttle shaft and looks like new fasteners in the carb base. Someone has gone through it by the looks of it. I would try bolting it on and running it. If you have issues check the jet and power valve sizes first, then learn how, or find someone to pull the emulsion tubes. If the small holes on the top of the emulsion tubes are anything other than perfectly round replace them. That's about all there is to it. Several good how-to's on YouTube if you like to fiddle with your own stuff.
I am running one of the new 81s on my banger - works great - you can get gravity feed to work but will likely want to install a fuel pump to avoid starvation issues under hard throttle. Am planning to upgrade to dual 81s to try to go a little faster at the drag strip but the single 81 setup works just fine for around town.
That’s kinda what I thought, seems like something someone would do when polishing and chroming. Thanks!
That’s the info I got when I purchased it. I’m just getting started and was going to start playing with a 97 but this was to hard to pass on. Going to Cedar Rapids Iowa swap meet this weekend so may look for one there. I anting to get myself familiar with inspecting and rebuilding! Thanks for the info!
you did good I run two on my B ohv conversions, one 97 on the B flathead the 7/8 means that you have an 81 base too ....many got swapped out with the 97 that is marked 1 for one inch @reffiesj is spot on about the fuel feed...(check out his banger build) they don't like any more than two and a half pounds gauge pressure with a pump...I have even tried a 3/8" gravity feed but a half a tank and below it had feed problems bangers are fun...I just had my '29 out to lunch with my old car buddys.....good therapy keep us posted
Thanks! I will definitely check out that build thread! I’d like to think I’ll get these parts I’m collecting all together one day! I’d like to swap the B motor and a 39 trans into my 29 Roadster! That’s the plan anyway!
good looking A Roadster the B motor is a good candidate for building some oil pressure too...it helps with engine longevity Antique Engine Rebuilding has modern B rods with inserts....stays dipper rods but keeps you from drilling a crank. the B pump can be modified for more volume and pressure by changing the gears to early V8 and adding a spacer. it's a little more involved than that, but food for thought and dreaming....
That is the stuff dreams are made of! I’ve been a toolmaker the last 25 years a lot of the time I wish I would have started in a motor shop. Maybe it’s never to late!
If you have a Winfield intake the Stromberg won't fit. Winfield carbs had a square base. I've seen some adapters but they were for stock 2 bolt manifold to 4 bolt - not for the Stromberg. The Winfield intake will have which carb it fits stamped on the bottom A, AA, B, BB, etc. Of course someone may have created an intake for a Stromberg that says Winfield. If you do have a Winfield intake sell it ($300-600) and buy one for the Stromberg. Or junk the Stromberg and get a Winfield carb ($700-1,000) y
I do have a Winfield intake and the ultimate goal would be to have a Winfield carb! I think mine is an SR-BB. Wasn’t sure but thought there would be a Winfield to ford/stromberg 3 bolt adapter? I do know a guy that has some experience in a machine shop! Maybe a little design time program it and go!
I may have miss spoke its marked S and BB. Would be fun to design and build an adapter. Could be more fun than the day to day stuff!
It would be quite easy to design a 4-bolt to Stromberg adapter . . . though I'm sure there has to be one made in the past. If you have CAD and CNC capabilities, would not take too long!
Yep, nothing easier! I would have thought that someone would have produced them back in the day, but maybe not! I would ideally like to find the Winfield carb, a fella can dream!
Let me look, I may have a cast adapter...4 hole Winfield to Stromberg base ....I just put one on a Windfield intake...the problem is that it gets the carb pretty high up above the hood line....no hood, oh...
