The 6 v pos ground voltage regulator or generator has been acting up in my 55 F1 hundred. For some strange reason, my amp meter is showing full discharge even though my battery is disconnected. Is there a possible explanation for this?
That’s what I was afraid of. Since I have an auxiliary volt meter, I’m not gonna worry about replacing the amp meter anytime soon.
I’d at least put both leads on one post rather than have voltage flowing thru the gauge via the two posts.
Johnny, thanks however I am not sure I understand your recommendation. Are you suggesting I remove the connection from the faulty amp meter and just use the under dash volt meter gauge as the sole pass through?
On the back of the ammeter you have two wires, each on one “post” bolted down. He’s saying disconnect one of the connections and move it to the other side, in effect just bypassing the meter. Make sure the battery stays disconnected while you do this.
Gotcha. With my voltmeter, there are no connection post rather there is a circular bracket the wire passes through.
Induction amp meter...cool the needle might just be stuck....maybe a few light taps on the backside with a screwdriver handle... just a thought....
The inductive amp gauge is MUCH safer than a pass through. Id also suggest it's just sticking. There might be something magnetic going on in back, too. If the tapping doesn't fix, try looking up old service tips from the era. The big three always had bulletins and such for issues.
Damn, you guys are good! I just learned something today. Never knew about pass through amp meters. Always thought they were only the wired kind in vehicles. Neat!
As far as electrical issues go the only real issue with an inductive ammeter is that old wiring might shake and wear through where it goes through the loops and short out. Otherwise it is just the magnetic field of current flow moving the needle.
If you are brave enough to take your meter apart (and a quick tap doesn't set it right), you may find it is a small iron filing, etc that is stopping the movement from returning (easy fix, just remove the filing), or the return to centre hairspring is broken or one end has detached.
Thanks for the follow up. Ya know, they built those old trucks for washboard roads. I think yours is being driven too smooth.
