A friend of mine sent me this photo in hopes that I could identify the car in this photo. It is a picture of their grandmother taken in 1930 in Syracuse, NY. I have tried the hunt & peck method to try to pinpoint the year, make, and model but have not been able to find a match. I knew that someone here would be able to nail it. Thanks in advance for your help!
My friend thought maybe it might be a Studebaker, but I'm not seeing one with a curved headlight bar... The emblem at the bottom center should be a pretty good clue.
Erskine close but different. No visible inset on inside of shell. Crank cover also different. Headlights bigger. https://photosantiquecars.blogspot.com/2013/08/1930-erskine.html
Nash had a visor like that with the moulding and a similar badge and what look like small badges in the headlight top edge.
I think the upper hinge on the door of the Chevy is higher than the one in the picture. Closer to the Nash or Desoto or Erskine.
durant? top hinges, visor and headlight peaks seem to be close. EDIT: and look at the headlight bar ends. Essex doesn't. Just working my way down the list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1930s_cars
The Durant could be it. Visor and headlights are dead on, bumper looks right, hinges same location, badges look right. Here is another picture of a 1931 Durant 612. It even has the diagonal stripe on the center of the bumper. Thanks for all the help guys!!
The emblem on the radiator shell and the crank hole cover on the 31 Durant in post 16 plus the little nub on top of the headlight ring all match the car in the original photo.
Yes, @carcruse & @j hansen, I think you are right - the 1930 Durant has horizontal hood side vents (which I can see in my friend's picture), but the 1931 has vertical vents. It also agrees with the year the picture was supposedly taken (1930). I have passed this information along, and she is most appreciative!
