Technical Is it okay to reuse 1929 front and rear U bolts and plate?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fernando Covarrubias, May 19, 2025.

  1. Hello quick question I got original 1929 model A front and rear spring U bolts and plate hardware. I’m currently started building my 1932 and was wonder if you guys think it’s a good idea to still use the original U bolts on this build? Or should I just buy new ones

Unless the threads are messed up, or the things were loose and have a groove worn in them, I'd guess the old ones are better than any new ones you could find.

...I agree with @alchemy ....use the ones that have been time and road tested...

I also agree. If the original U bolts are in good shape (not stretched or worn or bent up/whatever) I'd definitely prefer to use them over some new reproductions which are unlikely to be even close to the quality of the originals.

Yup, no such thing as torque to yield or one time use fasteners back then... I would sure use em before some crappy offshore produced repops

    I gotta interrupt please.
Same for a 1964 Ford truck?
    Use the u-bolts again?

Cuz I cut mine off after reading that U-bolts are not reusable.

The only reason I haven’t re-used u-bolts is if they were too rusty or I needed longer ones to add lowering blocks or something no matter the year. I even have way too many that I have saved off vehicles when I did put longer ones on that I will likely never use.

Old American built stuff is way better than anything made in China, today! Reuse anything in working order!

We can't see what condition the used parts are in...so it's hard to say whether or not they should be re used.

I re use as much old hardware as I can, though.

  14. I have worked on lots of tri 5 chevys. I reuse any original hardware cause it fits and holds better that new stuff.

Obvious damage would be the only reason to not reuse them. They were made with high quality virgin steel (Not recycled metal) to specific specs.

  17. See, the old ones are so good; they also work upside down.

I would agree use them but magnaflux them to be safe. You can buy a spray on (aerosol cans ) magnaflux kit reasonably inexpensive and get a black light and inspect them.
