The intake on my 74 Ford 4.9 L (300) has three large holes where the carb bolts to it, two are stud holes any idea what the third hole is for? Does anybody know if there is supposed to be some type of spacer between the carb and intake? Thanks!
pictures really help, because it's been over 30 years since I worked on one, and I forgot...but a picture might remind me....
Not a 300 but my old 1966 170 six had a fibre spacer. As for the hole, is it threaded? Could be a vacuum accessory for brakes, modulator, Pcv ?
That's it. Those three bolts also attach the exhaust manifold to the intake. If you choose not to use the EGR plate, a spacer may be needed. I'd make it out of Phenolic sheet if'n it were mine. In fact I made one for mine even though it didn't have the EGR. Those intakes run hot because they are right above the exhaust.
Sounds like an excuse to throw the factory stuff away and put on an Offenhauser 4 bbl intake and a nice set of headers. Add in a good cam and you will be surprised by what the old 300 is now capable of.
