any one have pictures of how all the springs and adjuster cablw go on front 66 f-100 brakes any help would be great. I am using 56 drums and backing plates with 66 hardware and shoes thanks
'56 and '66 hardware and shoes are one and the same. Any Chiltons or Motors manual will have a picture of it. All Fords are pretty much the same since '48 as far as drum brakes go til the late 80's. WWW.ford-trucks.com has alot of good info on these trucks. Hope this helps......
What about as far as 1/2 ton compared to 1 ton brakes stuff? Also when comparing the earlier stuff with the later: Is the hardware just the same? Because the bolt pattern on a later vehicle is different...isn't it?
Close but no cigar ... The 56 ones do not have the self adjusting feature that the 66 ones do ... 1956 With the self adjusters ... I had to trim the grease tin slinger ...
I can't see any reason why you couldn't just add the self-adjusting hardware. The shoes look exactly the same in the picture. What is the tin box for anyway?
Are the later self adjusting style easily adapted to the earlier spindles like say a 37-41' spindle? Is the only difference in the self adjuster? Also what about bolt pattern? Were Ford trucks always the same pattern? On earlier truck brakes 53-56, what differences were there? Overall, If having to choose an F1 brake to adapt to an early front end, what wouldbe the best most efficient choice? Thanks
As deuce roadster said when using the 66 self adjusting brakes the grease cup must be relieved to accomidate the adjuster cables, also the adjustment star on one wheel will have opposite threads and the manual adjustment slot on the backing plate will need to be "relocated"
I stand corrected, but at the same time, whens the last time you bought a "hardware" kit that included any self adjusting parts? Maybe the cable in some kits, most don't even have that. By hardware, I meant the springs, pins, etc. To answer LObrows question, all Fords were (with a few exceptions) basically the same in design, the difference will be in pin length, lead spring vs. back spring (ones longer/and/or stiffer than the other in the later models), but they all go together the same way.
The tin box is to keep grease from the shoes ... grease that MAY get out of the seals ... onto the shoes and drums Factory issed in early Ford trucks ... When I did the brakes on my 32 Ford many years ago ... I had 56 shoes and had them relined ... the self adjusters did not fit ( lack of certain holes as I remember ) so I got a set of 66 shoes and everything worked ... When I buy the the brake hardware kit at CarQuest ... I get everything in a box ... and I mean everything ... As a side note ... I was looking for good junk yard factory issued Ford front brake drums ( 53 to 66 DRUMS interchange ) and I found a 66 F-100 with decent drums and got to looking at the self adjusters and said ......mmm that might work. As I understand it ... for 37 to 41 and 42 to 48 Ford car spindles .. you need 53 to 56 backing plates ... 57 up are different. You need 53 to 56 F-100 hubs and 53 to 66 drums. All of this is in the tech section ...
big difference between the "late" 50s-60s brakes and the "early" 40s is that the newer ones are Bendix type self-energizing, they have one anchor at the top, while the early ones have two adjustable anchors at the bottom. "late" shoes and hardware won't come close to fitting "early" backing plates
So if using a 55 hub, with the 55 non self sdjusting hardware is ok? Or can you adapt the later self adjusting stuff to a 55 backing plate? As far as drums if i get a drum for a 55 or a 66 it will be the same?
