Some of the largest superchargers?

I have a dumb project idea that involves a big blower. Only ones I know of are the 980's and the psi c/d rotors. These seem to be the only ones I can find in that size and power range, seems to dwarf even 18-71's. Feels like it goes straight from the 980's to that obscenely large freight train blower. Does anyone know of any others, any certain brands or even old industrial ones that could be modified to work on a gas motor?

I'd haunt boat racing, bigger boat and vintage aircraft forums. Unless you are building from scratch, you would be better off finding stuff already made to use or modify. The fields listed tended toward larger engines which might fit the range you need. What about tractor pulling?
I had to look up the 980

Are you stuck on a positive displacement supercharger? You could size and pulley a centrifugal or mount a pair.

@Paulz good one! The original design was to pump air into mines, I bet they have BIG ones! May take some grunt to spin though.

I'll look into those, same with the blower paulz listed. I just want a really big badass looking blower, pretty stuck on positive displacement.

You could try THE source. I just looked at the front page, didn't dig deeper.

With mining being a boom n bust industry, if you can find a style and size you like the used or surplus might be worthwhile for something you are going to modify anyway.

Sorry, wen't to bed. I'm thinking anywhere between like 8 liters to like 18. Cause I don't think anyones gonna say the 980's dont look badass, and aren't massive. But I just wanna create something special, I don't care if it's the most optimal or the most perfect. Just want a big blower that I can make some crazy boost with, which will probably be the harder part.

Also just looked into that link you posted, those look like they would be awesome. Just gotta find one with the blower seperate and hopefully not like 10 grand.

That's what I'm thinking, only hard part is shipping. I can't drive and it's a ways away from where I live

Many of the industrial ones are iron, and weigh hundreds of pounds. The WW2 piston engine stuff was mostly centrifugal, but some were huge. Anything like a Whipple 980 or PSI is totally Off-Topic for here.

They were just brought up because they're the largest I know of that are actually meant to be on "regular" cars.

Thats a industrial vacuum pump. As mentioned, heavy,(like 150# and thats ones I rebuild, not the one pictured)no high speed bearings and the ones I rebuild the gears are not keyed or pinned. Only located by tapered shaft and retaining nuts.

Since you seem to know a bit more than me. what all would need done, at least in your idea. To turn that into a function gas or alcohol blower?

No telling if you could really make one work in an automotive application. So way more than it would be worth. If you are set on running a blower, I would look for one already set up for automotive use and run with it.
All the work has been done already and parts are only a phone call away.
No need to re invent the wheel.

worked on many Gardner Denver roots type blowers used in sewage treatment plants...big blowers
also there are pto driven blowers for bulk transport product transfer using air fluidization

Yeah I get what you're saying, I just wanna make something unique, something that's a 1 of 1. I feel like I can get it moving, it's just the issue of getting it moving well.

Must say that's incredibly badass, but whenever I look at twin supercharged motors. All I can imagine is them combined into one. Hence the me being dumb part

Sometimes reinventing the wheel is its own reward.

Solving problem B instead isn't a solution to problem A. It depends on what the OP wants the big blower for.

That is nothing like any 4-71's I have. You could probably put 3 4-71's inside if this thing. I am told it is locomotive.

There are lots of reasons why you probably shouldn't do this. Weight has already been mentioned, but depending on the motor you use, there may be problems with it being too long and making pulley alignment difficult if not impossible. The condition of the rotors to case walls could render one useless. IF you find one that's got usable walls and rotors, its going to take a LOT of hp just to turn it.
Also, you can only force so much air thru an intake passage/valve, so if that air can't leave the blower it will generate friction and heat. Possibly running it as a dummy set-up with no rotors might give you the "look" you want.....and hide a nitrous inside it. I think if you try to do something like this, it will get very expensive and may not work when done. Don't want to dissuade you, but don't want to see you spend a lot of money .......then a lot more money......and not get the results you want. Maybe consider just a conventional 8-71 with some kind of one off scoop atop it.
Didn't see any mention of what engine you are planning to use.

I've got two projects right now so it's gonna be a second before I get to it, but I was thinking some bbc dart or merlin block. I've never really went into the world of aftermarket blocks, felt like if I went through with my dumb idea I should at least try to keep it all together though.

  30. Might as well go this route
