Long weekend… improving weather. Maybe we get the body shimmed, bolted, prepped, and painted. Maybe… Went through this and it’s a complete carb with good br*** except for needing a choke lever. Parts are being cleaned and should be able to re***emble with gaskets this evening. Half carburetors almost done!
Getting the “extra” holes in the Winfield head plugged. And making a mess of one of my adapters trying to make it shaped like the originals.
Ha. Hardware store. The big hole in the water jacket top was/is for a temperature sender. That came from the plumbing section. The ones on the side… no idea what the point of those are. They’re not even pipe thread. They had cut-off bolts threaded in. I replaced with square head grub screws.
Maybe I’ll drill the heads of those grub screws and safety wire them together and really confuse people…
Hours of work… so many setbacks. I’ll spare most of the details. I’m really struggling with the front door alignment and as I tweak things, the doors are revealing themselves to be rougher than first thought. On a positive note, the rear doors seem to be solid and the alignment is going much better.
I need to decide on what is good enough for these front doors. This would be an eight year old car in the period, but the doors I’m working with are pretty rough.
Put the Sawzall away. Got it. I have them “pretty good”. There just isn’t much else to be done with what’s left of these.
And choke up on the BFH. Tap, tap, tap. As for fitting in period, think about how many 'new' cars are totaled these days and what a 2 year old, stolen, joy ridden and left abandoned car would look like, then add it sitting for a couple more years, when some low buck hooligan scoops up the pile for a song. It may not have a bunch of rust through, but beat up and bent is going to fit.
Good ***essment, Rod @RodStRace. The car is basically in “appropriate” shape for 1937. It’s been repainted a LOT over its years. Except for the two front doors, it’s solid. Now… how to do a period appropriate interior….

We’re going to spackle it and move on for now. School ends Tuesday and Spence will have more emotional equity to spend on enjoyable things. This was a really difficult school year for him. He’s wiped out. But Tuesdays at the Arrowhead sounds wonderful!
A few hours of soaking in a citric acid/water solution will remove the rust and not remove other metal. Rinse it with soda/water and do whatever repair works. Things like Rust Mort turn the rust into another oxide that can then be painted over or repaired. The citric acid is no more harmful than lemon juice.
Ok… I have a plan for the front doors. I’m not sure how much I want to divulge because of… well… shame. Let’s see how it goes first.

It’s heavy. I may have hurt myself… Gotta dig a hole in the tiny shop and then we can try for better Winfield adapters.
This shop was underwater. It’s all clutter. I just frame the photos so people think I know what I’m doing.
