I'm a little stuck on why I'm getting this noise. Any thoughts on where I should be looking. I did recently rebuild the carb.

    3 things to look at.
    1. Make sure base gasket is correct and in good shape.
    2. Make sure the accelerator pump / step up pump is functioning( replace as needed).
    3. Make sure your distributor is free and the vacc. pod is functioning.( distributor is advancing when giving fuel.)

  5. I knew I guy that tightened the distributor so it wouldn’t move. Didn’t think it was supposed to twist.

X2 on checking the vacuum advance

Check the two screws that bolts the bowl to the cast iron base. Use a right angle screw driver and you don't even have to remove the carb .Might find that the stock oil bath air cleaner isnt so bad either.

It does rev up. I can take it down the road and drive it but I still can hear that "air noise". I'm not an expert but feel The last 20 years of working on old cars gas made me feel something doesn't sound right. I did recently just rebuild the carb and made sure the gaskets surfaces were in decent shape. Maybe I just need to try a new carburetor.

I'll check the bolts. I had recently rebuild the carb. A week back as we are trying to get this thing road ready. What about the oil bath air cleaner??

Not a bad looking truck either. We felt pretty lucky to find this at very reasonable price.

Does it make the noise when slowly giving it gas?
Have you tried it with the air cleaner removed?

  14. Does it hesitate or bog when driving

Anthony asked the question that I should have asked you. If it is driving fine the air cleaner /air noise is Probably just a condition of the smaller breather /and paper element.
The factory oil bath wasn’t always the most free flowing but it did catch dirt and the intake noise was some what muffled. Or that’s been my experience.

Sounds about right to me. You got six cylinders ****ing in air through a small carb and that air cleaner does nothing to quite the air rushing in sound. I have two Carters on a 235 and when the air cleaners are off it sounds twice as breezy!

  17. Its the 6cyl version of the “dooowooop” sound you hear in all the 70s-80s movie car chases.

like flipping the air cleaner lid on a Q-jet

As far as the air flow noise goes, if you still have the stock oil bath air cleaner clean it up and stick it on with or with out oil in it and take a run down the road and back and see if the noise goes away. Always try the simple things first before getting carried away.

Sounds normal to me, they have a distinct sound to them, sounds like simplicity

I think that air cleaner is the cause of most of that strange noise. It's not uncommon for the air cleaner to act as something of a resonator to tone down the noise of the high speed incoming air flow. Like a resonator used in an exhaust system to dampen the noise of the exhaust gases. Still done regularly on later model EFI gas engines and diesels. Ever here the intake air racket a diesel makes with all the duct work and air cleaner removed?

Check for a vacuum leak, make sure the carb halves are not loose.

Other than that I agree that the noise goes along with the small air cleaner
