My dad only paid $250 for my 59....but that was almost 50 years ago...and it had been repainted twice by then!

Nice truck. No need to lower it, there are plenty of things to keep one busy just keeping it drivable

Hey Anthony, just a thought. Maybe mention to the young man that he's going to make some good memories with this truck, yet there might come a time when he's tempted to sell it. Encourage him to avoid that. Explain that this truck, his first car, will mean even more to him when he's older and he might regret selling it. Can I also add that you might warn him to protect his cool old truck from anything or anybody who might cause it harm. I've unfortunately had some of my cool old cars vandalized and stolen in the past. Maybe you can help him avoid any of that, too.

You know the deal, Anthony, so this will probably just get a nod.
    Clean out the cooling system!

Way cool! Clean it up, make it safe, enjoy! Time capsules are a rare find!

  7. Quoting, Make it go, make it stop, drive the heck out of it!!! That is a very seriously cool truck! Good for him. One more Youngin’ with the bug!

  8. Yep. My advice was make it go and stop
Drive the crap out of it.
his dad was with him and asked about pre bent brake lines. Yes they are available but they’re also ez to make. Told the young man the local parts stores can hook him up on the brakes. Told him how to find his own part numbers. Our local places are used to me doing that. Both our NAPA and AZ has experienced parts folks that can help.
He has my contact if he needs any help.
Showed him how to shine up the old paint and clean the rust stains from the grill and bumpers
I suggested removing the seat to clean the truck and get rid of the rat piss smell. Got my fingers crossed he listened.

    I’d drive it!
The older I get the more respect I get for the old straight 6 engines. They are bullet proof and good for many miles. Way before installation V8…I’d run the straight 6 with an overdrive transmission!
After a good wash, try some Liquid Turtle Wax with cleaners (fancy wax doesn't have cleaners, it just has better wax)…if it needs more, then do the rubbing compound route.

That is nice! He will have plenty of memories with a truck like that.

  11. He came by and picked up an extra distributor I had
    He’s graduating tonight.
I told him everybody in the worlds gonna try to tell ya to do this, that, needs an LS….
He was like “yea, I know. Think I’ll cruise it like it is for a while”

Good call on driving like it is for a while. Just get him on here so there will at least be some in the world that tell him not to put an LS in it… :D

You can teach him brazing when you split the manifold ....

Let him know about this site, need more young folks here. And let him know before high power motors installed, he needs be able to control the truck (rebuilding front and rear axles) and that he can stop it (some are going to ding me on this, but disk brakes up front) people driving newer cars like to pull in front of old truck and slow down to make turns. Nothing wrong with drum brakes, but disk has better stopping power.

  15. Needs a split manifold and a pair of Cherry Bombs. Hehe.

I'd assume he already earned a passing grade, but that right there is either respect for his elders with parts or straight out his opinion, which is passing with honors.

Best thing I ever did back in the day to my stock 55 was put a Saginaw car 4speed and a floor shifter in it.
Made it a whole different truck for driving around .
A Rodcjester 2bbl on a home made adapter helped a little to.

I'd imagine a T5 would really be nice in one.

Cool truck great score . Wish I still had the 55

Yes on the split exhaust but straight pipes no mufflers. Hard to beat the sound of a straight 6 with splits

Good looking truck. I wonder if that rear bumper is off some other vehicle - trucks in that era typically came without a rear bumper, and that one looks more car-like.

Okie Pete and chryslerfan55 like this.
  20. It’s a truck bumper.
I guess the original owner paint the extra$$$ for that and 2 door mirrors.

At least it didn't have a farmer rear step bumper with the dealer's logo embossed in it.

When you look at the original pix of the front and rear bumpers it's apparent that they match extremely well (pretty much exactly); as if the factory put them there.

  23. Those are sought after now:).

  24. They sure are! Just as dog dish hubcaps. I can’t believe what I paid for a set of 4 that we used to throw away. Sadly, Lumpy and I are the only ones who like them on my truck. IMG_9329.jpeg IMG_9328.jpeg

That's not selling it, that's passing it along.
