O/T Bakersfield question.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by cougardan, Feb 25, 2004.

  1. That other Bakersfield post reminded me of an experience I had. I had a job interview there probably 15 years ago. We flew from Lubbock out to LA and drove over for the meeting.

The question I've got is this... why in the hell is there a West Texas town in the middle of the California desert. That was the strangest trip we ever made. We were surrounded by brick houses, oil tanks, and it smelled bad.
    It was Twilight zone wierd.

We could have been in Odessa or Muleshoe or Pecos?

I couldn't get out of there fast enough. If I was going to leave Lubbock for sunny California, I sure wasn't going to end up in Bakersfield- "the other West Texas".

LOL, At least its not as bad as Houston. I drove thru there once. It smelled bad I had to throw up. Satin

  3. That's funny! It sure does look like Midland or Odessa. But Texas has better radio and BBQ and good old, fight your way out to the parking lot, roadhouse bars.

BUT, Bako has Oildale and Oildale has Famoso Raceway. Which has the biggest damned flies outside of Tiajuana. [IMG]

I'm certainly no historian, but during the dust bowl era and the depression many "Okies" and Texan's made there way wast. Alot of the opportunity was in the oil industry which attracted the "roughnecks from Texas and the central plains.

Look up Merle Haggards bio and it kinda' tells the story....

    I growed up there.

My mom's side came out from Kansas during the dust bowl.
My dad's are beaners from Amado, AZ.

It's a weird place. Definitely a pickup truck society.

I recall driving past a town named Bakersfield in east Texas. It didn't smell, but it didn't have a dragstrip either. Cali Bako rules! HA!
