I picked up a newly rebuilt 348, from an estate. I want to put a little hotter cam in it, so I took this out guess it is stock replacement? maybe a longshot but there are some smart folks here. Thanks, Tim Cam number 263173
Have you got a dial indicator and magnetic base (or a way to solidly attach the indicator and arm)?? If so, degree the cam out and thus reverse engineer the cam card straight from the cam you have....not much different than sending the cam out to someone who has a Cam Doctor measuring rig set-up. If you need a degree wheel, there is a download printable version, just glue it to any round flat object you can put a hole through the middle of....pie tin, small cheap pizza pan, old plastic frisbee, cheap plastic picnic or Walmart dinner plate. Tavia Performance Products Downloadable Degree Wheel If you don't have a 1" travel indicator and mag base, I suggest you get one.....valuable for numerous hot-rod uses and nearly every hotrodder should have one Harbor Freight is one budget source. Amazon can set you up as well.
I think that's a 409 truck block and not a 348. Based on the X on the front of the block, the big relief cut at the near the deck, the casting number on the back (I could be reading wrong) and then the drilled and tapped holes in the passenger side of the block near the timing chain cover bolt holes. But rule of thumb with the un notched pistons for valve reliefs is 220 degrees at .050 and a 110 LSA is the biggest you can go without clearance issues. That at least for the lower hp 348's, should be similar on a 409
I didnt even check block number, was a quick run up to Maine on a Sunday morning. I heard specs like a low HP 409 will work, melling makes one I hear.
You dont have valve relied in the pistins so you know the intake/exhaust duration on a 348/409 is limited .555 or less.
It looks like a 655 block, which is one of the better 348s. Showcars can probably fix you up with a mild hydraulic like their 908 or 911 to keep it mild, make sure you get some quality lifters.
I hear Melling makes a 409 / 340 hp replacement that is in hyd and will lilely not have any clearance issues. It is a 655 block.
348 truck block. A 409 would be a 656. I'd back off the Melling, you would fall asleep with the it. The SC/Iskys are a little pricey. You might also call Camcraft and see what he can whip up for you. You could play it a little safe with the Howards by running BBC 1.7:1 rockers JIC.
