something has changed because they now say in the instructions that come with new tires that you can no longer use wesleys or anything else that containes lye to clean whitewalls. they recommend nothing more than mild soap and water

Which brand turned yellow after a couple of hours and you returned for your money back?

You said you repurchased some Coker’s.

I just bought a set of Coker’s yesterday.
    Curious minds need to know.

Goodyears, bias ply are the ones I returned. I have never had any trouble with Coker bias plies. I have zero experience with radials. They say NO WHITEWALL CLEANER OF ANY KIND with new whitewall tires. I don't know what you ordered

OK, that is WILD. Especially for what they cost. At least you were able to return them, but that's a lot of time spent monkeying around trying to get a set to stay white. I wasn't sure what to think but that little experiment really proves it.

Moriarity> >these are turning brown from the black rubber and mold releases leeching thru the whitewall from the back side> >

Your quick experiment suggests more of a surface phenomenon than leeching from the back side.

Guess we need to use sunscreen on whitewalls now . After seeing Mark’s test results.

Crazy they change in such a short time I wonder what happens after a year or so. You can always do it yourself with white wall marvel… image.jpg

White Wall Marvel! I have Universal Whitewall Tire Coating, Shur Wonder-White and Whiz Tyre-Wyte but I never heard of that one, will be on the lookout for one of those cans/jars.

This is crazy. Thanks for the heads up on what to expect with those Goodyears. :( At least I know what not to buy when I put new whitewalls on my 56. Interested to see how the Coker’s do over time.

When I was a kid I'd use Ajax or Comet cleaner along with a small brush to scrub whitewalls clean. It worked very well, they'd come out snow white. I don't know if you'd dare to try it on the new reproductions.

I'm running those Auburn bias-look radials and they're honestly the nicest tires I've ever had on an old car. I've been using Bleche-white on them with a Magic Eraser and they clean up perfectly.

Nothing wrong with real bias-plies tho

same thing happened to me on a set of 6.70-15 ww from coker. Took 3 sets for them to get it right. Super frustrating.

In other news, I'll be mounting 4 new 7.00-17 'stone WWWs in a few weeks. Not a cheap date, gonna freshen wheel color and new shoes. This topic will be in the foreground thru Labor Day and I intend to share a 90 day what's up with everyone. A trip is planned but plans are always....

One would think something called "Whiz Tyre-Wyte" might actually turn them yellow:D.

But seriously, I'm with @57JoeFoMoPar and @Dan Hay and running the pie-crust Auburn tires from Diamondback. Two thumbs up on looks and drivability!!

I used Westley's back in the 80's. As mentioned by many, not the same stuff anymore. Thankfully a buddy sent me this advertisement when I asked for advise. Wet SOS pads are all I use now. Of course, SOS ain't gonna help Mark with his problem. That paper-cover, outside-sunlight test is just crazy!
