Hot Rods What's with all the car raffles?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 57chevymadman, May 31, 2025.

  1. Facebook is loaded with classic car raffles, anyone here ever win or know someone who did?

Doesn't matter, because the only thing you can be sure of is that YOU won't win :)

I sold a car, and it ended up getting given away as a promotional sweepstakes. Kind of a weird feeling to see that happen to something you spent all that time building and driving around, just going to a random person.

I’ve won a few door prizes but never a raffle. Most of the raffles my wife and I have entered were for things I knew I would never win like a dream house but the proceeds always went towards St Jude or a reputable charity.

Not FB but I won a NSRA roadster pickup 20 yrs ago.
It took a total of about 7-8 G’s to get it on the road with taxes, getting a title and maintenance.
But I’d pay that again to get a 50,000 car. :)
Don’t trust FB with anything. More thieves waiting for you to slip up than you can imagine.

  8. If you have a lot of followers it's an easy, questionably legal depending on local legislation, way to "sell" a car. Put it online as a raffle with "limited tockets" for $100 a piece and have a pile of people send you $100 who take a chance on winning a car worth much more. Don't have to deal with tire kickers or lowballers or no shows. Just pick a number and done.

You have to wonder what the law has to say about it. You sell $100 tickets, people give you money, you are hoping to sell 5000 of them, you sell 10, do you let the car go for $1000? Do you refund the tickets? Do you go to jail for a ponzi scheme? I don't participate personally.

As far as FB goes, I used marketplace for the first time last week, sold the seats out of my dune buggy for $150 and got $200 for a set of 14" torque thrusts that I took to a few swap meets and always brought em home. 2 days, $350 bones. Marketplace gets a pass in my book.

Raffles became a pretty big thing during the Covid-era and have actually seemed to calm down somewhat. There was about a two-year period where every other nerd on the planet was trying to raffle off any piece of shit they were having trouble selling through regular channels. It seemed like it started off with a few cool cars and pretty soon devolved into guys trying to sell 300 $100 tickets, netting them $30k, for a car they couldn't sell on FB for $12k. Pretty soon guys were raffling off project cars, engines, whatever junk they could, just to try to make a buck. I think there was a collective eyeroll a year or two ago and they have definitely been on the decline, thankfully.

There were a few that were called out for being blatant fraud, and even a video of one of these "drawings" where the guy wasn't as smooth as he thought he was and could be seen palming a ticket in his hand as he reached into the pile of tickets to "pick the winner" who turned out to be a friend of his....

That said, I have seen and do know a few people that did legitimately win cars in some of these raffles. Some guys cashed in for sure and a few people definitely won some cars, but it's fizzled out quite a bit. I'm just glad every time I open any kind of social media now that I'm not bombarded with "hEy GuYs! :D gEt reAdy fOr a ChAnCe to WIN ThIs KiLLeR rIdE! OnLy 300 TiCkEts wILL bE soLd! :eek:PaYmEnT ThRoUgH PaYpAL FrIenDs aNd FaMiLy ONLY! ;);) tELL yOuR FriEndS!:cool:"

In California legitimate non profits can hold raffles. For all others if there is a prize, consideration, and chance then it is illegal. The way companies/people get around the rules is to remove one of the three parts of prize, consideration, and chance. Obviously they can't remove the prize or chance. So they remove consideration by stating no cost to enter the raffle. Usually it's done in small type buried in the raffle announcement and most times you have to request an entry by mail or some other method in order to receive your "free" entry.

Are they actual car raffle adds or the "buy something from us and get a chance to win a car and the more you buy the more chances you get" thing?

I haven't seen many actual raffles but have seen a crap ton of buy something, get a chance to win adds. Plus if you buy one thing because you believe in the charity it supports you get hammered with adds .

The raffle could be on facebook, at a local show or even here on the HAMB.
Makes zero difference as I consider them all scams no matter what anyone putting them on says.
    Trust nobody.

There are no scams, just suckers.

  17. YouTuber car giveaways are usually legit but chances are low you will win. Albeit a greater chance than the lottery.

Funny all the hate for Facebook. Its a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, particularly if those circles are far and wide. FB Messenger is particularly good and both those are critical parts of our business. Blaming them soley for scams seems a bit odd to me. Keep in my mind the most I was scammed was from an ad here on the HAMB many years ago. Ive learnt a LOT since then and encourage others to be aware of any ad posted anywhere, especially resposnses to wanted ads.

Many of those raffles are super suss to me although Im sure some are legit. I just dont do it. Its up to others if they do or not. There were a heap being done for Harleys which seems to have decreased.

Yeah, selling 200-400 $100 chances for a bike worth half of the take... better off putting your money on a 200-1 long shot at the horse track, at least then you don't end up with some scabbed together headache.

  21. I've got two good raffle stories for you guys.
    #1
The last year they had the ticket booths and the fencing, and Boyd had the big display, that separated the Swapmeet from the Venders, at the LARS, there was a raffle for a 32 Roadster, all donated stuff, crate motor, body frame, etc. Everybody gathered around, they picked the ticket, and nobody came up. They announced it again, and again, but nobody came up. People started yelling "FLUSH IT!" They said," one more time, then they were gonna pull a new ticket". Then, some dumbass comes out if the crowd with the ticket, walks onto the stage and says...."WHAT DID I WIN?" There was so many water bottles, hotdogs, and other shit thrown at the guy. Fuckin idiot!!!!

Had to be maybe 40yrs ago, there was a guy with a 55 Chevy Convertible, that was supposedly used in the Cheech n Chong movie. He showed up at Friscos in Downey, Johnnys Broiler in Downey, LARS, GNRS, etc. and a few more shows. Don't remember how many tickets he sold, but it was a shit load! Never had the drawing, never announced the winner, car was never seen again. Don't think he got caught, and don't what became of the car, but I've never seen or heard of it.

  22. I've noticed so many Supercars being raffled off on the internet, including 50-60k cash. Obviously, they must be able to write it off, cause nobody would take a loss like that. Lambos, Porsches, Corvettes, Audi R8's, etc. Many of those guys who rebuild crashed cars, Goonz Squad, Matt Armstrong, and Tavarish have all given away cars.

  23. I would never buy a $100 ticket. But, I would buy 100 $1 or $5 tickets! hahaha
It would have to be for something that you would win, RIGHT THEN at the show.

  24. Many of those, want you to buy merchandise, to enter. But, they do give away the cars, on the show.

  25. Well....I remember auctioning things off, to help out HAMBandy's family...here on the HAMB. I don't think I have ever seen anybody try to raffle off anything on here. Don't think it's allowed. I started a donation, years ago here on the HAMB, for a young member who lost his dad and couldn't afford the funeral costs. And, this isn't the same as bad sellers. They always get dumped by Ryan.

I was asked to pull a raffle ticket at a Xmas party once....and pulled my own ticket! lol I did the right thing, handed the ticket to the MC, and pulled another one. Of course, my ticket went back in. Didn't win anything....

  28. I also find it funny that those bashing Facebook have never actually been on Facebook, pretty ridiculous.
Also like was mentioned marketplace is pretty good, I've bought some pretty good deals on there. Last week I sold about $1100 bucks of stuff in a few short hours, stuff I had hauled to a couple small swapmeets with no takers and I didn't even have to ship anything. In fact I could've sold more if I was willing to ship but shipping costs are out of control.
As far as the raffles I've only got on a couple where you buy merchandise and get entries worth dollar on dollar you spend, so I at least had the merchandise in hand. I know local racers that "waffle" things (engines, generators, transmissions, cars, etc) and it's all legit, nobody pays until all the spots are taken.
Now getting back to Facebook you definitely can keep up with family, friends (new and old) see a ton of vintage car stuff or whatever else you want to search out on there. I recently reconnected with an old Army buddy on there, someone that I hadn't seen in 40 yrs, man we had a good time reliving the past.
Look at this crazy deal that was listed for pick up only, I sure wish they would've shipped, but like me they didn’t want to.
